PDX Triathlon Festival successfully goes Virtual

June 24, 2020

Why cancel when you can still accomplish so much good?!

Portland, OR – The PDX Triathlon Festival, in its 39th year, is one of the oldest triathlon events in the country. This year, due to COVID-19, race directors had to face the difficult decision to either cancel the event or move forward with a modified version.

“It was an easy decision” said Sherri McMillan, Race Director, “With that kind of history, you just can’t cancel and we’re so glad we didn’t quit. Watching the official race video brings us so much joy! We were literally tearing up! We would have missed out on so much goodness had we just canceled. The world needs positive energy like this!”

Watch the official race video here.

The race had almost 600 athletes from 15 states, over 100 kids raced, and the event raised nearly $6000 for Share of Vancouver WA and Special Olympics Oregon. A highlight of the event was 90-year-old Lew Hollander, participating in the virtual event on his birthday.

McMillan boasts “It’s clear that Virtual Racing is better than no racing! Look at the faces in the video! Consider how good this is for your physical fitness, mental health and stress release! Pay close attention to the kids’ faces! WOW! Focus on what you CAN do not on what you can’t do! Athletes are used to overcoming obstacles. Adapt, adapt, adapt!”

Why Racing Events, the producer of the race, are already onto their next virtual event, the 24th Annual Pacific Crest Endurance Sports Festival, boasting more than 20 different events including a Virtual Marathon, Half Marathon, 10K, 5K, Trail Runs, Beastman 72.3, Olympic & UltraSprint Triathlon, Duathlon, AquaBike, Paddle Triathlon, Cycle races and Kids events. McMillan states “We literally offer something for everyone at this virtual event. If you love endurance sports, this is the event to do. Plus the SWAG is off the charts. Athletes get a Beach Towel, Big Bling, Gear Bag and different events offer different finishers’ shirts. Many of our athletes are completing multiple events to collect various official merchandise and earn the coveted BEAST medal.”

You can register and compete in the Virtual Pacific Crest Endurance Sports Festival by July 4th at https://whyracingevents.com/pacific-crest-endurance/.
