Olympian takes GFNY Monterrey title

March 12, 2020

Top riders from Mexico and Latin America broke course records at GFNY Monterrey last Sunday, March 8

NEW YORK CITY, March 12, 2020 – Over 1500 riders from 20 countries took part in GFNY Monterrey Inter Proteccion last Sunday March 8. Top riders were in attendance from Mexico and Latin America resulting in an exciting fast-paced race with Olympic Cyclist Hector Rangel taking the title.

GFNY Monterrey started in the famous Parque Fundidora with ideal racing weather: cool and overcast skies. A slow controlled start switched up to full speed as soon as riders exited the park area.

A few enthusiastic riders tried their luck to make an early break but were quickly reigned in. After 25km, eventual runner up, Ismael Garcia (MEX) attacked and rode away solo only to be caught again a few minutes later.

At Km50, Garcia and eventual winner, former 2012 Olympic Cyclist, Hector Rangel started working together and made a joint attack to create a break of 7 minutes from the main chase group. Due to a lack of collaboration in the chase group, Garcia and Rangel were never caught. The chase group was left to battle for the final podium spot.

With just 7km to the finish, at the start of the Chipinque climb, Rangel suffered a mechanical which was unfixable. It seemed his race and challenge for the title was over until a spectating rider offered his bike to Rangel to complete the race. Rangel took the bike and finally got going again. He quickly caught Garcia to take the title in 3:18:55. Garcia followed in 3:19:34. The podium was completed by Flavio De Luna (MEX) in 3:20:00.

In the women’s race Gabriela Mijangos (MEX) demonstrated a flawless race and was the only female rider to stay with the front peloton that lead the chasing women by over 20 minutes. Mijangos crossed the line in dominating 3:25:07, merely 5 minutes off the men’s podium. Second place went to Tania Rodriguez (MEX) in 3:42:59. Ana De Leon (MEX) rounded out the podium in 3:43:15.

Next up on the GFNY circuit is the GFNY South America Championship Punta del Este this Sunday March 15 in Uruguay.
