Murphy signs controversial e-bike law requiring registration, insurance in New Jersey

January 19, 2026

Gov. Phil Murphy signed a controversial e-bike bill into law Monday, citing safety issues in the wake of several fatal crashes and ignoring objections from cycling groups that argued there are better ways to address safety concerns.

The new law places all kinds of e-bikes — from those that need to be pedaled to activate a motor to fast e-moto bikes that are like a motorcycle — in the same category.

Owners will now need to have a license, and register and insure their bikes, one year after the new law takes effect. Violators would face a $50 fine. Nj.com
