Kilimanjaro Trail Run partners with Carbon Tanzania to effect change

November 29, 2022

Raise awareness globally, accomplish good locally

/ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – Kilimanjaro Trail Run offers four high-altitude races over two days on Africa’s tallest mountain. In partnership with Carbon Tanzania, the race is using high-quality certified carbon credits to compensate for all emissions generated during the event.

“Kilimanjaro is this incredibly iconic mountain, and our trail run is the ideal destination race,” explains race promoter Brett Harrison of Red Knot Racing Company. “More importantly, though, we believe the mountain serves as a beacon directing our attention toward climate change, deforestation, and the need for clean energy. More than anything we want to demonstrate to runners how we can appropriately shoulder the responsibility of caring for the planet we share.”

Carbon Tanzania is a social enterprise that creates economic value in natural resources for indigenous people through the sustainable management of forests and biodiversity. Carbon Tanzania generates forest-based carbon credits that enable Tanzania’s indigenous resource-owners to earn revenues from the protection of their natural resources. These verified emissions reductions allow businesses and individuals to invest in a nature-based solution that serves the climate, indigenous communities, wildlife, and contributes to delivering Sustainable Development Goals.

Events kick off on Saturday, 2nd September with 67km (42mi) and 74km (46mi) ultra marathons topping out at 3850m (12600ft) and 4170m (13680ft) respectively. On Sunday runners may choose between a half and full marathon. All four events heavily feature Shira Plateau, an expansive volcanic caldera with world-class running and incredible views of the 5895m (19340ft) Kibo Peak.

“Carbon Tanzania is really excited to be partnering with Red Knot Racing for the Kilimanjaro Trail Run. Red Knot Racing have done a great job of connecting at a local level supporting athletes and communities, reflecting our own commitment to community-led conservation in Tanzania.” says CEO Marc Baker.

Kilimanjaro Trail Run is a bucket list race with an appropriate event for every member of your trail running group. The ultra marathons will challenge even the most experienced endurance athletes, while the half marathon — and it’s 7.5 hour cutoff — is designed as an adventurous introduction to running at higher elevations. Make the most of your time in Tanzania, and combine a weekend of trail running with a wildlife safari or a Zanzibar island vacation.

“Red Knot Racing Company organizes running races that are as beautiful as they are challenging,” says 2022 ultra finisher Jessie Davie. “Brett and his crew excel at providing adventurous runners the opportunity to race in otherwise difficult to reach areas. And it’s encouraging to know they are as serious about sustainability as they are adventure.”

Registration for Kilimanjaro Trail Run is open, and all race entries are priced at 50% through Sunday, 4th December only. Enter discount code HALF-PRICE to save. Click here to register.
