Greater Boston Youth Invited to Participate in Kids Day at the Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon

June 25, 2021

Partnership with Youth Enrichment Services (YES) Designed to Introduce Kids to Multisport

BOSTON – June 25, 2021 – ethos, the mass participation event organization that presents the Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon, has announced plans for Kids Day at the 2021 Boston Triathlon. The annual event will return to the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation’s (DCR) Carson Beach in South Boston on August 28, 2021.  Registration is now open at www.BostonTri.com

Designed to introduce youth throughout Greater Boston to multisport competition while encouraging fitness and healthy activities, Kids Day at the Boston Triathlon will feature the USA Triathlon-sanctioned Kids Splash & Dash for athletes ages 7-15 as well as a Kids Fun Run for athletes under the age of 7.

“Kids of all ages often embrace swimming and running individually but they may not view themselves as a multisport athlete,” said Michael O’Neil, president of the Boston Triathlon. “We want to welcome kids from across Greater Boston to the Boston Tri, introducing them to multisport competition in a fun, exciting and safe atmosphere.”

The annual Splash & Dash event is designed to introduce young athletes ages 7-15 to the sport of triathlon.  Athletes will be placed in one of four age groups: ages 7-8, ages 9-10, ages 11-12, and ages 13-15.  The 7-8 and 9-10 age groups will swim 100 yards and run an untimed 1K. The 11-12 age group will swim 200 yards and run an untimed 2K. The 13-15 age group will swim 200 yards and run a timed 2K.

The swimming will take place at DCR’s Carson Beach in South Boston near the McCormack Bathhouse and will be in shallow water. The run will take place on the Harborwalk and the DCR Mother’s Rest Field.

“The safety of all athletes is of utmost importance,” continued O’Neil.  “With this in mind, we’ve worked closely with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to developed new safety protocols that will be integrated with federal, state and local guidelines to ensure a safe event.”

Youth groups from across the state are invited to participate.  For the third year, the Boston Triathlon is partnering with Youth Enrichment Services (YES), a nonprofit organization based in Boston that provides Boston’s youth with year-round outdoor enrichment and leadership programs, including track & field, cross country running and skiing, snowboarding and skiing, etc.

Bryan Van Dorpe, Executive Director for YES, states. “We are thrilled to be able to introduce Boston youth, who normally would not have the opportunity to participate in competitive running and swimming activities, to the sport of triathlon at an accessible and neighborhood venue.”

The Columbia Threadneedle Investments Boston Triathlon brings together athletes of all ages and abilities to compete in Olympic and sprint distance triathlons.  All events take place at the DCR’s Carson Beach, a stunning venue in the South Boston waterfront.  Additional information is available at BostonTri.com.
