GFNY heads to Peruvian Andes for inaugural race in 2021

June 18, 2020

3200 meters above sea level, Cusco in the Peruvian Andes will host the inaugural GFNY Peru on April 18, 2021.

NEW YORK CITY, June 18, 2020 – Cusco is the historical capital of Peru, and recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. At 3200 meters above sea level, it will offer a challenging race amidst a historical backdrop.

GFNY Peru will offer two distances. The competitive long route of 135km and 1884m of climbing promises to offer something for every cyclist with a mix of climbs, descents, technical challenges and fast flats. The non-competitive medium route covers 70km with 1658m of climbing.

Both routes pass famous historic ruins of La Otra Casa Real del Sol, Puka Pukara and El Valle Sangrado de los Incas along with a multitude of various archaeological centers and stunning Peruvian landscapes that highlight the route.

Cusco is easily accessible by air. Short daily flights depart from Lima, Arequipa and Juliaca in Puno. The weather is mild and perfect for an April race. Cusco has a wide variety of hotel options for every budget, as well as a diverse gastronomy that masterfully combines the products of the Andes, which is reflected in its many restaurants and cafes.

Cusco is a city waiting to be explored. Outside of race day, Cusco’s Imperial City and its various temples and tourist spots such as Koricancha, La Catedral and La Piedra de 12 Angulos can be easily explored on foot. The ancient Incan city, Machu Picchu, is must-do day trip for Cusco visitors.

“Cusco has a vast network of roads that offer tranquil and varied cycling,” said Lidia Fluhme, GFNY’s co-founder. “GFNY Peru riders can expect a breathtaking race course with imposing views of the Peruvian Andes, beautiful nature and archaeological Incan sites.”

“We are very excited to bring GFNY to Peru for 2021. We will receive GFNY riders with open arms and open hearts and guarantee one of the best experiences on a bike in Peru,” said Alexandra Whilar of GFNY Peru.

The top 10% of riders over all age groups in the long course qualify for a front corral start at every GFNY World race for 380 days, including the GFNY World Championship New York City held on May 16, 2021.
