Largely due to his age and ailments, former Portland Marathon President Lester V. Smith Jr. was spared prison time and sentenced Tuesday to three years of probation with eight months of home detention for tax evasion amid a more than $1.2 million embezzlement scheme from the race nonprofit that a prosecutor said he “destroyed.” Oregon Live
