Colombia’s Team Medellin, Ukraine’s AMORE E VITA, Hagens Berman Axeon, Elevate–Webiplex Pro Cycling and Team Illuminate Added to Maryland Cycling Classic Line-Up

America’s Biggest One-Day Pro Cycling Race Up to 10 Teams with a total of 16 to 17 slated

BALTIMORE, Maryland– The Maryland Cycling Classic supported by UnitedHealthcare, America’s top one-day professional cycling race and the only UCI-sanctioned road race in the U.S., today announced the next round of teams confirmed to compete at the inaugural event, scheduled for September 5, 2021.

Team Medellin (COL), recent winners of the Vuelta a Colombia and a stage of Africa’s top race the Tour of Rwanda, along with Hagens Berman Axeon (USA),one of the most successful continental teams, have been added alongside Elevate-Webiplex Pro Cycling (USA), Team Illuminate (USA) and Team AMORE E VITA (UKR),the longest-running professional team in operation to date.

“For Team Medellin, we are honored to be selected to participate in this new and exciting race, the Maryland Cycling Classic,” said team director Jose Julian Vasquez. “This is the most important one-day race in the Americas now and part of the prestigious UCI Pro Tour. Team Medellin always gives our all and we want to show we are among the best teams in the world. We know there a lot of Colombians in America that love Medellin and Colombia. Our mission is to boost the face of Medellin and Colombia with every result we earn.”

The Maryland Cycling Classic is part of the prestigious UCI Pro Tour and is already one of the top-ranked events in North and South America. The latest additions mark10 teams total for the race, including the previously announced World Tour teams Trek-Segafredo (USA), Team Bike Exchange (AUS), top U.S. Pro Continental team Rally Cycling, and Continental teams Aevelo (USA) and Wildlife Generation Pro Cycling (USA).

“We’re very excited to race at the Maryland Cycling Classic this fall,” said Axel Merckx, the general manager Hagens Berman Axeon and former 2004 Olympic bronze medalist. “It’s great to see professional cycling back in the U.S. and I know cycling fans here are eager to see some bike racing.”

Long-time elite-level cycling event managers and promoters Medalist Sports and KOM Sports are behind the event along with the sport tourism economic engine Sport and Entertainment Corp. of Maryland, led by Terry Hasseltine. As the race weekend approaches, organizers of the Maryland Cycling Classic will work closely with state and local officials to ensure safety protocols are followed based on the most up-to-date CDC guidelines regarding COVID-19.
