April 15, 2026 /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – On the weekend of April 25-26, the global triathlon community will focus its attention on Taitung for the latest edition of Challenge Taiwan. With 10,000 athletes registered to compete over two days, the event remains by far the largest triathlon in Asia and arguably one of the most significant endurance sports gatherings in the world. Among the thousands of age-groupers, a strong field of professional athletes will take center stage, all vying for the prestigious Middle Distance title.
Men’s Pro Field: A Battle of Giants
The men’s professional race is shaping up to be a thrilling showdown. The primary favorites are Kieran Storch (AUS) and Mike Phillips (NZL), both of whom are known for their strength over the Middle Distance. However, Challenge Taiwan is notoriously demanding; the persistent high temperatures and heavy humidity create a grueling environment that tests even the most seasoned pros.
While the Australian and New Zealander are expected to be the main protagonists, they cannot afford a moment of weakness. New Zealand’s Brett Clifford is also on the starting list and is considered a serious threat for the overall win. Furthermore, the field includes dangerous outsiders such as Benjamin Zorgnotti (FRA) and Sven Altermatt (SUI). The local crowd will have plenty to cheer for as well, with Taiwanese stars Shen Yen Hsieh, Chia Hao, and Tuan Chun Chang looking to capitalize on their home-field advantage and potentially cause a major upset.
Women’s Pro Field: Olympic Star Power
In the women’s race, the level of competition is equally high. Much of the anticipation surrounds the Swiss sisters, Julie and Nina Derron. Both have spent the last few seasons building an impressive resume in long-course racing. Julie Derron, in particular, arrives with immense prestige as the silver Olympic medalist from Paris. Her combination of world-class short-course speed and newly acquired long-distance endurance makes her the woman to beat.
However, the Derron sisters face a formidable opponent in Rebecca Clarke (NZL). Clarke is a renowned powerhouse in the sport and possesses the experience necessary to put the Swiss favorites under immense pressure from the swim through to the finish line. Other notable contenders looking to make their mark include Australia’s Katie Remond, Switzerland’s Solome Altermatt, and Amy van Tassel from the United States.
A Celebration of Sport for All Ages
Beyond the high-stakes professional Middle Distance race, Challenge Taiwan remains a true festival of triathlon. The two-day schedule is packed with various events to ensure there is a race for everyone, including:
- Long Distance
- Olympic & Sprint Distances
- Junior Races
