San Francisco Marathon Announces Course Shifts to Historic Waterfront for 2026
May 19, 2026
Made Possible with Help from Port of San Francisco, MUNI and the San Francisco Municipal Transport Agency
SAN FRANCISCO, CA — (May 19, 2026) /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – Today, organizers of The San Francisco Marathon announced this year’s Saturday 5K start and finish lines are moving to the iconic Embarcadero.
By centering the race along the downtown waterfront, the move introduces a more scenic, accessible, and runner-friendly experience. This change not only highlights the city’s stunning bay views but also streamlines the logistics for thousands of athletes and fans. For the first time, the new layout allows for a later start time, offering runners extra rest and a more manageable morning schedule.
“We’d like to extend our sincere thanks to the Port of San Francisco, MUNI, and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) for their partnership and support in bringing this exciting change to life!” said Lauri Abrahamsen, Race Director. “This new setting offers a beautiful waterfront experience and, importantly, allows for a later start time, making race morning a bit more relaxed for everyone.”
With the start line now positioned in the heart of the city’s transit hub, the race is doubling down on its green initiatives. The Embarcadero location provides seamless access via regional transit systems, reducing the carbon footprint of the event and simplifying the commute for locals and visitors alike.
Participants are strongly encouraged to use MUNI and other transit options to ensure a smooth, stress-free arrival.
