45th Annual San Francisco Marathon makes history with The City’s Biggest Race, Non-Binary+ Division, & Groundbreaking Technology Partnerships

July 27, 2022

Event organizers plan to expand future races and continue their path of runner inclusivity

JULY 27, 2022, San Francisco, Calif. /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – The San Francisco Marathon ended this weekend with over 22,000 participants, thousands of virtual runners, and the largest Capital One Café Health and Wellness Expo, marking it as the biggest marathon in the city yet. Event organizers aimed for a more inclusive and accessible race, bringing California’s first non-binary+ division and award, which was won by SF-based runner Cal Calamia.

“The 2022 San Francisco Marathon was a celebration of the running community and the feeling of returning to normalcy,” said Lauri Abrahamsen, Jumping Fences Inc. Director of Operations. “We really saw the running community grow this year. Partners and vendors were able to engage with the community, we had more millennials than ever before, and we were super excited to have three categories of winners: top Male, Female, and Non-Binary+. We are so thankful to the runners and sponsors that made this amazing event come back to life.”

In keeping with the Bay Area’s reputation as the home of groundbreaking technology, the event showcased some unique partnerships that no other running event has featured. They included Waymo’s Autonomous Vehicle Pace Car and Adobe’s augmented reality medal experience, which each runner was able to download. Each runner also received an instant customized 3d medal as they crossed the finish line.

The SF Marathon was also the kick-off for Degree Deodorant’s national “Not Done Yet” campaign, highlighting 3 runners from around the USA who came to San Francisco to conquer their own barriers and challenges of completing a marathon for the first time after prior attempts. With customized activations on course to motivate them along the way, all three succeeded in accomplishing their goals of finishing the SF Marathon.

The 2023 San Francisco Marathon weekend will take place July 22-23. More details to follow.

The San Francisco Marathon is sponsored by Capital One Café, Degree, Waymo, Nella by FItbiomics, Garmin, Nuun, Outside Magazine, Gu, Flyhomes, and other local and national brands. A percentage of the event’s proceeds will be donated to a 1% For the Planet-approved partner charity.
