42nd Grand Prix Bad Homburg – Virtual crit bike race “GrandPrixBadHomburg” on ROUVY

July 29, 2021

Bad Homburg, Germany / As in the previous year, Bad Homburg's open criterium road race will run virtually, in its 42nd edition, on Sunday, August 1st, 2021 5:00 p.m. CEST on ROUVY. The special guests will be Nils Politt from Bora-Hansgrohe and John Degenkolb from Lotto-Soudal.

Bad Homburg, Germany / July 29th, 2021In these times of the Corona pandemic, the RSC Bad Homburg and the mayor of the city of Bad Homburg have come up with this alternative race format again, following last year’s great success and remarkable attendance.

Everybody can and is welcome to participate. For free. (Link for an additional 14 Days Free ROUVY Trial)

Ambitious, amateur athletes and specially invited World Tour pro riders, this year’s Tour de France stage winner, Nils Politt (Bora-Hansgrohe) and “Local Hero”, John Degenkolb (Lotto-Soudal), will join and fight in this virtual crit race. The race will be on the filmed, real but virtually augmented, race course of 40 km (25 laps).

Cyclists can use their own bike with a smart-trainer connected to the Internet, and register for the race on ROUVY’s augmented reality platform.

How does it work?

The virtual route was built with the footage of the original route combined with the GPS information from the 1.6-kilometer circuit around the Bad Homburg spa gardens. This route is located in the ROUVY APP (you can also download it beforehand and keep it ready to avoid any internet connectivity issues during your ride); when the rider steps on the pedals, depending on his/her power/speed, the route will move faster or slower on the screen, accordingly. This creates the impression that the rider is on the road “in person”. He sees competitors virtually in front of him, can overtake them and see his position all along.

Broadcast

Viewers are welcome to follow and watch the event that will be live-streamed on the YouTube channel here.

Although the colorful cycling festival on Kaiser-Friedrich-Promenade is cancelled in the real world – virtually everyone can still enjoy the great atmosphere and excitement on your home screen. As in the previous year, Robert Bengsch will be the anchorman and commentator; he also commentates for major cycling events such as the Tour de France at Eurosport TV.

Registration

Bad Homburg’s Mayor Alexander Hetjes strongly supports this form of “Corona safe” sports event. The organizers Moritz Dick and Friedrich Uwe Janovszki are again very happy to present this high-class cycling competition.

The race is open for registration HERE.
