40th Anniversary Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon™ To Host First Ever ESCAPE Aquathlon
February 11, 2020
SAN FRANCISCO (February 11, 2020) – IMG, a global leader in sports, events, media and fashion, is set to launch ESCAPE Aquathlon on Saturday, June 6, at 7 a.m. (PST), the day before the Escape From Alcatraz Triathlon, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Staying true to the triathlon’s storied start, athletes will jump from a boat to begin their 750-meter swim, exit the water at the St. Francis Yacht Club and run to transition at Little Marina Green. Next, they will swap their wetsuits for running shoes and take off on a 5k run along the San Francisco Bay Trail, heading west towards Crissy Field and looping back at the Warming Hut to finish their ESCAPE at Marina Green.
This new swim/run short course race is designed to provide more athletes with an opportunity to experience the thrill of the ESCAPE and add a new challenge for those looking to test themselves ahead of the triathlon. From the adrenaline-fueled start off the Hornblower’s San Francisco Spirit Yacht to the dramatic views on the run and an exciting chute finish, ESCAPE Aquathlon participants will get a taste of the legendary Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.
“Whether utilizing the ESCAPE Aquathlon as a warmup to Sunday, or as an introduction to the multisport lifestyle, this new race is a great way for athletes to ‘get their feet wet’ in the sport,” said IMG’s Vice President of Action Sports Events, Jennifer Lau. “Unique to this race, it also provides a rare opportunity to experience the challenging San Francisco Bay swim made iconic by the history of Alcatraz Island.”
Registration for the public will open on Tuesday, February 18, at 9 a.m. (PST). The registration fee will start at $295 per person and is limited to 400 athletes. Please note, the challenging bay swim is not recommended for beginners. Interested participants are encouraged to visit www.escapealcatraztri.com/aquathlon to register, as space is limited.
