XTERRA Portugal Celebrates 11 Years Together

May 28, 2025

GOLEGÃ, PORTUGAL (May 28, 2025) /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – XTERRA Portugal celebrates its 11th edition from May 31-June 1, 2025, in the historic town of Golegã, a location renowned for its equestrian heritage and firmly established as one of the most historic stops on the XTERRA World Tour. The weekend includes a Full Distance Triathlon on Saturday (1.5K swim, 35K bike, 10K run), followed by Sprint and Super Sprint races on Sunday that serve as qualifiers for the 2025 XTERRA Youth World Championship. With a €7,500 Elite prize purse and a strong community presence, the event offers both high-level competition and a uniquely local experience.

Since its debut in 2014, XTERRA Portugal has become a symbol of endurance and tradition. Over the years, champions like Ruben Ruzafa (ESP), Solenne Billouin (FRA), and Arthur Serrières (FRA) have made their mark, while recent winners such as François Vie (PRT) and Beatriz Ferreira (PRT) have brought national pride to Portugal. In 2024, Emma Ducreux (FRA) captured her first title in Golegã, and Ruzafa (ESP) returned to extend his record to six wins. With continued support from Visit Golegã and a reputation built on athlete experience, the event continues to grow as both a sporting and cultural landmark.

The course layout showcases the region’s natural beauty and technical demands. The 1.5K swim takes place in the calm waters of the Lagoa da Alverca, offering close spectator access. The 35K bike course features cobbled streets, steep climbs, and over 10K of singletrack through one of the largest cork oak forests in the world. The run includes farmland loops, river crossings, and a rope-assisted bank, combining natural challenges with crowd-driven energy for a thrilling finish.

Among those set to race in 2025 are François Vie (PRT), Rui Dolores (PRT), Petr Cmunt (CZE), Inês Raimundo (PRT), Diogo Carvalhinho (PRT), Octávio Vicente (PRT), Hugo Baluga (PRT), Sergio Espejo (ESP), Adriano Domingos (PRT), Juliana Costa (PRT), and Nathalie Olasagasti (FRA), forming a deep and diverse field of returning champions and podium contenders.

Youth categories play a central role on Sunday, with the Sprint (750M, 18K, 5K) and Super Sprint (300M, 9K, 2K) races offering rising athletes a path to the XTERRA Youth World Championship in Trentino. Athletes like Francisco Gomes (PRT), Tomé Sentieiro (PRT), Manuel Gomes (PRT), and António Alpalhão (PRT) return to compete at the next level, transitioning from Youth A to Youth B. Their progression reflects the growing strength of Portugal’s youth development within the sport.

XTERRA Portugal brings together athletes and supporters in a setting where sport and community thrive. Some local families host athletes and offer home-cooked meals, while others turn out as volunteers, marshals, or spectators. The town comes alive with celebration, and many visitors stay longer to enjoy horseback rides or explore the nearby Paul do Boquilobo Biosphere Reserve, a protected UNESCO site. It is this blend of challenge, hospitality, and natural beauty that makes Golegã a highlight for XTERRA’s off-road community.
