Community support expands the Junior Scholarship Program from 6 to 24 recipients, helping remove barriers for young riders to experience world-class gravel racing
Steamboat Springs, Colo., (March 5, 2026) /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – SBT GRVL® presented by Wahoo today announced the selection of 24 junior athletes for its 2026 Junior Development Scholarship Program, significantly expanding the inaugural initiative in response to overwhelming interest and exceptional applicant quality.
Originally, six athletes (three young women and three young men) were selected from a highly competitive pool of applicants who submitted essays about why they want to compete at SBT GRVL® p/b Wahoo in 2026. Thanks to generous financial support from Storied Places, Town Hall, Steamboat Social Club, and an anonymous local donor, the program was expanded to include an additional 18 athletes.
“The Routt County community, local businesses, and our partners made this expansion possible and we’re incredibly grateful for that support,” said Amy Charity, founding partner and CEO of SBT GRVL®. “We created this scholarship program to help develop the sport and make gravel racing more accessible for young athletes, regardless of background or financial resources. As the Junior Development Scholarship Program grows, SBT GRVL is continuing its commitment to lower barriers to participation, invest in the next generation, and strengthen the future of gravel racing through opportunity, mentorship, and community support. This expansion also moves us toward our goal of having 150 junior racers on the start line at SBT GRVL.”
The 2026 scholarship recipients range from 12 to 18 years old and represent a wide range of cycling disciplines, including cyclocross, road, mountain, and gravel. Athletes were selected from across North America, with five recipients from the Steamboat Springs community and others from Colorado, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, California, Arizona, British Columbia, Pennsylvania, Wyoming, North Carolina, Idaho, Arkansas, and Washington.
In addition to scholarship support, the Steamboat Springs community has stepped up to help welcome visiting athletes. Host housing has been secured for several recipients, including support from local partner Moots, along with additional accommodations provided by Routt County residents.
WTB has also partnered with SBT GRVL® as a the Official Bike Saddle Partner and stepped in to sponsor the Saddle Up Junior Award, providing limited edition saddles to the Black Course Junior podium winners and custom podium jackets to the overall male and female Junior Champions, celebrating junior achievements on race day.
