FindMyMarathon.com Releases The 50 Best Boston Marathon Qualifying Races for 2026; Rankings Shift Amid New B.A.A. Downhill Penalty Rules
January 13, 2026

Atlanta, GA (January 13, 2026) /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ — As marathoners across the United States set their sights on qualifying for the Boston Marathon in 2026, FindMyMarathon.com has released its annual ranking of the 50 Best Marathons to Qualify for Boston. With Boston qualifying standards becoming increasingly competitive—requiring runners to beat the qualifying standard by more than four minutes in recent years—the list serves as a critical resource for runners pursuing a coveted BQ.
Over the past decade, earning a Boston Marathon qualifying time has grown more challenging. Even after the Boston Athletic Association (B.A.A.) lowered qualifying standards by five minutes for most age groups for the 2026 race, runners still needed to beat the new standards by 4 minutes and 34 seconds gain entry into the field.
“As the road to Boston becomes increasingly competitive, our goal is to give runners a clear, data-backed advantage when choosing where to race,” said Greg Hosier, founder of FindMyMarathon.com and 12-time Boston Marathon finisher. “This year’s Top 50 highlights the premier events where marathoners can find the right combination of quality organization and fast course conditions to improve their chances of reaching the Boston starting line.”
The 2026 rankings are based on an analysis of course profiles, historical qualifying success, race organization, field size, weather conditions, and overall PR potential. The resulting list includes races that consistently produce Boston qualifiers while also delivering high-quality race experiences.
Top 10 Marathons to Qualify for Boston in 2026
- California International Marathon
- Erie Marathon
- Sugarloaf Marathon
- Ventura Marathon
- Cascade Express Marathon
- Mountains 2 Beach Marathon
- Baystate Marathon
- Last Chance BQ.2 Marathon (Illinois)
- Cheap Marathon
- Indianapolis Monumental Marathon
The 2026 rankings reflect a major shift in the qualifying landscape driven by the B.A.A.’s new Downhill Penalty Index. Beginning with the 2027 Boston Marathon, qualifying times from courses with a net drop of 1,500 feet or more will be adjusted by five minutes, while those with a net drop of 3,000 feet or more will be adjusted by 10 minutes, a move designed to level the qualifying opportunities.
In prior years, downhill marathons dominated Boston-qualifying lists. Last year, more than half of the Top 50—and nine of the Top 10—featured significant net downhill courses. With downhill penalties now factored into the analysis, the 2026 rankings reflect a more balanced mix of race types, with downhill courses accounting for just five of the Top 10.
For runners who prefer flatter or rolling terrain, FindMyMarathon will also release its 50 Best Non-Downhill Boston Qualifiers on January 19, 2026.
