Carlsbad 5000 to Celebrate 40 Years of Fast
April 2, 2026

World’s Fastest 5K returns on Sunday, April 12, with 8,000 runners, Olympians and scenic racing along the Pacific Ocean
CARLSBAD (April 2, 2026) /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – One of Southern California’s most iconic road races is preparing to celebrate a milestone anniversary.
The Carlsbad 5000, widely known as the “World’s Fastest 5K,” will mark its 40th running on Sunday, April 12, bringing more than 8,000 runners and walkers to Carlsbad Village for a morning of racing, entertainment and community celebration.
“The Carlsbad 5000 is the premier 5K road race in the world and has been a North County tradition for 40 years,” said longtime endurance industry executive John Smith, owner of Groundwork Endurance, which organizes the event. “The running is exceptional, but the local endurance community is what makes Carlsbad special. From live music and the beer garden to the Health and Fitness Expo and elite invitational races, downtown Carlsbad becomes the place to be on race weekend.”
Since its debut in 1986, the Carlsbad 5000 has grown into one of the sport’s most recognized events, attracting elite athletes, recreational runners, families and walkers from around the world.
Over four decades, the race has produced 16 world records and eight U.S. records. More than 195,000 runners from all 50 states and 21 countries have participated since its inception. The oceanfront course, cool coastal temperatures and deep competitive fields have long made Carlsbad a destination for some of the world’s best distance runners.
Brooks Running, a leading performance brand, returns as the ‘Official Footwear’ sponsor of the Carlsbad 5000 continuing a longstanding partnership. This year’s anniversary celebration will include several tributes to the race’s history.
Six runners who have participated in every Carlsbad 5000 since the inaugural race in 1986 will be honored as Legacy Runners and presented with custom anniversary jackets recognizing their 40 consecutive years at the event.
Organizers also have arranged for a plane to fly a “Carlsbad 5000, 40 Years of Fast” banner above the Pacific Ocean during the People’s Race.
American distance running legends Meb Keflezighi and Deena Kastor will headline race weekend as official ambassadors. Kastor’s connection to the event runs especially deep. In 2002, she set a women’s world record of 14 minutes, 53 seconds on the Carlsbad course, one of the defining performances in race history.
“The Carlsbad 5000 has always been one of the most special races in the country because it brings together every level of runner,” said Kastor. “You have Olympians, professional athletes, longtime participants and first-time runners sharing the same streets and celebrating the sport together. Reaching 40 years is an incredible milestone and speaks to how much this race means to the running community.”
Race day begins at 7:00 a.m. with the Masters Women division for runners 40 and older, the first of nine races scheduled throughout the morning. The elite men’s race is set for 12:30 p.m., followed by the elite women’s race at 12:35 p.m.
The event will offer a total prize purse of $25,000 across the Open and Masters divisions, including $5,000 awards for the top male and female professional finishers. Organizers also will offer a $5,000 bonus to any athlete who breaks the American record.
Winners in each division will receive custom handmade surfboard trophies, a nod to Carlsbad’s surf culture and beach-town identity.
This year’s official charity partner is the Boys & Girls Clubs of Carlsbad, which will receive a $5,000 donation to support youth athletics programs.
Ainsley’s Angels of America also will be part of race weekend, bringing 40 push teams to the event in celebration of the Carlsbad 5000’s 40th anniversary and helping make the race accessible to athletes of all abilities.
The annual “Party by the Sea” begins as soon as the first runners cross the finish line, transforming the streets of Carlsbad Village into a festival atmosphere with live music, entertainment and the Pizza Port beer garden.
Forty years after helping establish the 5K as one of the most popular race distances in the country, the Carlsbad 5000 remains one of road racing’s signature events — a blend of speed, history, community and a distinctly Southern California atmosphere.
