Why Cheaper Entry Fees Aren’t Saving Independent Iron-Distance Races

Whether you call it an independent iron-distance, a non-Ironman full, or an ultra-triathlon, it’s essentially the same thing. These local, grassroots events provide the same 140.6 miles of swim, bike, and run that we all know and love, just under a different banner than the big name.

But the independently owned iron-distance race is disappearing at an alarming rate. You can count on one hand the number of these triathlons left in the United States.

In 2022, the Michigan Titanium Triathlon saw a peak of 126 athletes at their iron-distance race. In 2025, they had just 64 athletes, half what they had three years prior. As a result, this will be the final year Michigan Titanium hosts a full.

In Idaho, the Bear Lake Brawl Triathlon has cited complicated logistics and a lack of participation (30-40 athletes) in its decision to end their iron-distance triathlon offering. triathlete
