Previewing the Pura Vida at the Heart of 2025 XTERRA Costa Rica

August 20, 2025 /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – XTERRA Costa Rica returns to Las Catalinas from August 22–24, 2025, bringing off-road festivities to Costa Rica’s Guanacaste coast. Athletes will take on the Full Distance Triathlon with 28 qualifying spots for the XTERRA World Championship in 2025 or 2026, along with a $7,500 Elite Prize Purse. Juniors (18-19) and Youth B (16-17) competitors will also line up in the Sprint Triathlon to chase their dreams of qualifying for the Youth World Championship.

The course begins in the warm waters of Playa Danta before tackling miles of purpose-built singletrack in the surrounding tropical dry forest and finishing on the cobblestone streets of Las Catalinas. With steep climbs, flowing descents, and ocean views throughout, the layout offers both challenge and scenic reward for every athlete.

Athletes continue to praise the event for its atmosphere and setting. “The trails here are a dream—flowy dirt, jungle, and rock all woven together into a true off-road playground,” said John Wiygul (USA). Local standout Álvaro Campos (CRI) called it “a huge opportunity to race at a high-quality standard event” and highlighted the pride of displaying Costa Rica’s natural beauty to the world.

Beyond triathlon, the weekend will also feature the Trail Half Marathon (31.2K) with 58 qualifying spots for the XTERRA Trail Run World Championship, alongside additional trail runs, open water swims, and kids races. Together, these challenges for all skill levels demonstrate that there’s a passionate community on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast ready to share their terrain and hospitality with everyone.
