New August issue on body positivity celebrates runners of all sizes and ages
SAN DIEGO – July 16, 2015 – Women’s Running, the world’s largest women-specific running magazine, today released the cover of its August issue featuring the first regular-sized runner to appear on the cover of a fitness or running magazine.
“Our readers already know that fit women come in every shape and size. You can go to the finish line of a race and see many different sorts of bodies accomplishing amazing things,” said Jessica Sebor, editor-in-chief. “That’s why this cover is important to us. We want to support all women on their running journey.”
New York-based cover model, Erica Schenk, took to the trails of Brooklyn’s Prospect Park for the cover shoot. The 18-year-old has been a runner for 10 years and reacted to being on the cover, stating, “Women of all sizes deserve to be praised for good health and have a presence in the media.”
“I think every woman has had the experience of looking at a magazine rack and not seeing herself represented,” adds Sebor. “As a culture we’ve moved beyond this homogenous idea of what healthy and beautiful looks like, but generally speaking, the magazine industry hasn’t. Too often, average-sized runners are only celebrated are in ‘before’ pictures. But running isn’t about changing your body. Being fit doesn’t mean what you look like; it’s how you live your life. We want to celebrate that.”
