Women For Tri Announces Recipients of First-Ever Grant And Scholarship Programs Awards To Support Female Triathletes

Women For Tri raises more than $100,000 in its inaugural year

TAMPA, Fla. (January 14, 2016) — Women For Tri, an initiative supported by IRONMAN and Life Time, The Healthy Way of Life Company, announced today the recipients for the 2016 Women For Tri™ Triathlon Club Grant and Collegiate Scholarship Programs.

Women For Tri 2016 Triathlon Club Grant Program

The Triathlon Club Grant Program was established to support local triathlon clubs as they develop programming and activities to increase female participation in triathlon. In its initial year, Women for Tri awarded 24 grants with an average grant of $2,500 per club. Participating clubs will utilize funds to provide: specific training for women triathletes with a focus on removing barriers to participation; educational programs for women triathletes; and networking and social gatherings with a focus on recruiting and engaging women to participate in triathlon. Awardees, listed below, span 17 states and include four all-women clubs, two university clubs:

  • Dare2Tri Paratriathlon Club, Illinois
  • Final Kick Running & Triathlon Club, Virginia
  • Girls Gone Tri, Illinois
  • Golden Gate Triathlon Club, California
  • Infinite Multisport, Michigan
  • Mullica Hill Women’s Triathlon Club, New Jersey
  • North Texas Multisport, Texas
  • Ocean City Swim Club, New Jersey
  • Playmakers Triathlon Club, Michigan
  • Ridgewood Tri Athlete, New Jersey
  • Tri it for Life, North Carolina
  • Tucson Tri Girls, Arizona
  • University of Alabama, Alabama
  • UW-Madison Triathlon Club, Wisconsin
  • Wasatch Triathlon Club, Utah
  • Without Limits and the Pink Ladies, North Carolina
  • X3 Endurance, Tennessee

Women For Tri 2016 Collegiate Scholarship Program

The Collegiate Scholarship program is designed to assist female collegiate triathletes as they develop within the sport. Women For Triawarded five $5,000 grants to full-time undergraduate or graduate students who are active members of their respective collegiate triathlon team. Awardees were chosen based on their commitment to sport, leadership, and triathlon potential and ability. The scholarships will be utilized by the student athletes to purchase gear, books for coursework, hire a private coach, and/or offset tuition or school fees. The 2016 awardees are:

  • Laura Haley, senior at University of Arizona
  • Amanda Leibovitz, Ph.D. student at University of North Texas
  • Katherine Miller, junior at University of Wisconsin-Madison
  • Cindy Solomon, junior at San Diego State University
  • Leah Taylor, senior at University of Texas at San Antonio

“I am so grateful for this scholarship opportunity, as it will allow me to compete in Cozumel for Team USA,” said Katherine Miller, scholarship recipient from University of Wisconsin-Madison. “Thank you to Women For Tri as I am so happy to be a part of this community!”

Throughout the 2015 season, Women For Tri has raised funds for these programs through merchandise sales, IRONMAN World Championship slot fundraising and financial matches from the IRONMAN Foundation and Life Time. In total, more than $100,000 has been raised to support programs which are focused on bringing women into the sport of triathlon. The scholarship and grant programs, which were only available to U.S. residents in 2015, will be available for global applicants starting in 2016.
