USA Triathlon Hires Thomas Reilly as Commissioner of Officials

Reilly has served as Officials Coordinator for the Southeast Region since 2008

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — USA Triathlon today announced the hiring of Thomas Reilly as Commissioner of Officials, a role responsible for interpreting and enforcing the USA Triathlon Competitive Rules and supervising a nationwide network of Regional Officials Coordinators. Reilly, a Category I USA Triathlon Official and Level I International Triathlon Union Technical Official, begins his full-time national staff role immediately. He will work remotely out of St. Petersburg, Florida.

Reilly has served since 2008 as the USA Triathlon Florida Region (now Southeast Region) Officials Coordinator. In that role, he has been responsible for recruiting, training, supervising and assigning Competitive Rules Officials to USA Triathlon Sanctioned Events. Throughout his career, he has taught approximately 150 certification clinics and assigned officials to more than 900 multisport events in the Florida/Southeast Region.

Reilly has also made significant contributions to USA Triathlon’s nationwide competitive rules and officials processes, developing the Regional Officials Coordinators Handbook in 2010 and the Elite Rules Guide in 2014. In addition to his role as an official, he has been a member of the Florida/Southeast Region for the past 10 years and is currently its Vice Chair. He was also a member of the USA Triathlon Board of Directors from 2005-07.

“I am proud to welcome Tom Reilly to our full-time USA Triathlon staff after many years of involvement with the organization as a volunteer,” said Rocky Harris, CEO at USA Triathlon. “Tom’s passion for multisport and his commitment to fair play make him an ideal hire, and we look forward to his leadership in this role.”

“I am thrilled to be named as the Commissioner of Officials for USA Triathlon,” Reilly said. “It is an honor to be able to work firsthand with such dedicated and experienced USA Triathlon staff and officials.”

Reilly has officiated at some of the highest-profile triathlon events in the United States — including the Hy-Vee Triathlon in Des Moines, which was the largest professional prize purse in the sport for several years.

Prior to his officiating career, Reilly was the Chief Financial Officer for several major airlines — including Command Airways, which was named Airline of the Year by the Air Transport Association in 1985. A published author, he has written more than 20 books for adults and children in addition to many magazine articles. His 2001 book Black Nights: The Story of the Tuskegee Airmen was recommended by former Congressman Ike Skelton as a mandatory reading for all military personnel. Reilly also lectures frequently at museums and colleges across the United States, and is currently researching and writing a book about early aviation.

Reilly earned his undergraduate degree from Bridgewater State University in Bridgewater, Massachusetts, and his Masters of Business Administration from Northeastern University in Boston.

Reilly replaces Charlie Crawford, who announced his retirement in January (effective tomorrow) after 21 years as USA Triathlon’s first full-time Commissioner of Officials. Crawford became a USA Triathlon member in 1987 and was an active age-group triathlete for the next 10 years. He became certified as a USA Triathlon Official in 1990, and after several years of officiating at national and international championships, he was named Commissioner of Officials in 1997.

Throughout his career, Crawford wrote, managed and revised the policy manual for USA Triathlon Certified Officials. He co-authored the USA Triathlon Competitive Rules for both youth and paratriathletes, taught more than 150 certification clinics and introduced hundreds of new officials to USA Triathlon. Crawford has attended more than 300 triathlons as an official and has worked at the majority of USA Triathlon’s owned National Championships since 1997.
