April 15th, 2014

Arlington, VA – Since 1958, the members and supporters of the Road Runners Club of America have gathered in different cities around the country for the Annual RRCA National Convention (#rrcaconvention).  The RRCA Convention is a great opportunity for running club leaders, race directors, fitness professionals, certified coaches, sponsors, running industry professionals, and runners to come together to share information, best practices, and contribute to the national mission of the RRCA, which is to promote running as a sport and healthy lifestyle choice.

The 56th Annual RRCA National Convention will be held in Spokane, WA, hosted by the Bloomsday Road Runners Club.  Attendance for the RRCA Convention is at an all time high with hundreds of attendees registered, including the new offering of the RRCA Coaching Certification Cohort, which is sold out.

“Sponsorship support has been extremely strong this year,” noted Jean Knaack, RRCA executive director.  “We definitely appreciate our sponsors’ support as it allows us to maintain the most affordable running-industry meeting registration rate in our industry. The RRCA Convention expo, designed to spotlight businesses that support the running industry, is also sold out.”

The RRCA Convention officially starts with the Welcome Reception on Thursday May 1 and concludes on Sunday May 4 with the 37th running of the Lilac Bloomsday Race. While race registration is separate from the convention registration, registered RRCA Convention attendees will get preferred seeding at the event along with a commemorative race shirt. The RRCA Convention boasts a jam-packed schedule of fun, networking events, and educational opportunities designed to promote the running community both locally and nationally.

The Trio of Amazing Olympians, including Bernard Lagat, Don Kardong, and Deena Kastor, will be speaking at the networking luncheons and the RRCA National Running Awards banquet where key contributors to the sport will be honored.

The RRCA Convention would not be possible without generous sponsor support. Gold sponsors for this year’s convention include: The Bloomsday Road Runners Club, Star Insurance, K&K Insurance, RunSignUp.com, Ashworth Awards, Leslie Jordan, The Driven: Race and Club Solutions, Expert Performance, and the Spokane Sports Commission A complete list of sponsors can be found at http://www.rrca.org/convention/sponsors/, and they will have a presence both at the trade expo and throughout the weekend.

The all-inclusive registration fee for the RRCA Convention is only $375, and registration for the event is open at www.RRCA.org/Convention/.

The 56th Annual RRCA National Convention, which will be held in Spokane, Washington, by the Bloomsday Road Runners Club, officially starts with the welcome reception on Thursday May 1 at 5:00 PM and concludes on Sunday May 4 with the 37th running of the Lilac Bloomsday Race.  Race registration is separate from the convention registration, however registered RRCA Convention attendees will get preferred seeding at the event along with a commemorative race singlet.

The RRCA Convention consists of a trade expo, continuing education for certified coaches, educational workshops on best practices for running clubs, training programs, and events, and much more. Several social networking events are planned involving the “Trio of Amazing Olympians” starting with the luncheon on Friday May 2 featuring Olympian Don Kardong.

Kardong is best known for his 4th place finish in the Olympic Marathon in Montreal in 1976, running a personal best of 2:11:16, missing the bronze medal by 3 seconds. In 1977, he helped launch the Lilac Bloomsday Run, which now attracts 50,000 participants a year.

On Saturday May 3, the luncheon will feature Olympian Bernard Lagat. He has competed in four Olympic Games, winning medals at 1500 meters in Sydney 2000 (bronze) and Athens 2004 (silver) while representing his native Kenya and then competing for USA in Beijing 2008 and London 2012.

Olympian Deena Kastor will be the keynote speaker for the RRCA’s National Running Awards banquet on Saturday evening of May 3. In 1997, Kastor was awarded an RRCA Roads Scholar grant during the second year of the program. She qualified for the 2004 Olympics in both the 10,000-meter race and marathon. She gave up her spot in the 10K, however, to focus in the marathon. The decision proved to be a wise one as she won the bronze medal, the first medal for an American marathoner in 20 years.

The all-inclusive registration fee for the RRCA Convention is only $375, and registration for the event is open at www.RRCA.org/Convention/.
