Money raised helps fight childhood obesity and encourages a healthy lifestyle, self-discipline and teamwork through the sport of triathlon
CHICAGO, IL (July 11, 2014) – The Transamerica Chicago Triathlon, produced by Life Time – The Healthy Way of Life Company, announced today the return of the Tri-Masters Invitational Kids Triathlon on July 26, 2014 in support of the Tri-Masters Sports Initiative Program. Founded in Chicago 1992 by local endurance legend Bernard Lyles, Tri-Masters helps fight childhood obesity and encourages a healthy lifestyle, self-discipline and teamwork through the sport of triathlon.
The Tri-Masters Invitational Kids Triathlon, a USA Triathlon sanctioned event and open to children ages 6-15, will take place as part of the 3rd Annual Ready 2 Race Invitational Tri, an event that offers a dry run for select, first-time triathletes preparing for the Transamerica Chicago Triathlon in August. The event is free of charge, although a USA Triathlon youth membership is required and a recommended donation of $25 per participant is strongly encouraged. If needed, one year scholarships are available for youth participants ages 6-17. Registration is now open at www.tri-masters.org
This event is made possible by a grant from the Transamerica Chicago Triathlon, Chicago 5th Ward Alderman Leslie Hairston, and the Chicago Park District and through support of the entire Chicagoland endurance community. Triathletes, coaches and friends are asked to support Tri-Masters Sports Initiatives programs through both financial donations and via gently-used tri gear.
“As someone who cares deeply about the health and future of this community, I am extremely excited about the Tri-Masters Invitational Kids Triathlon, the only triathlon in Chicago’s beautiful South Shore neighborhood,” says Alderman Leslie A. Hairston, Fifth Ward. “In addition to promoting healthier lifestyle choices, Tri-Masters Sport Initiative Programs also serve as a safe environment for at-risk youth and encourage teamwork, perseverance, and total well-being.”
The TransAmerica Chicago Triathlon weekend presented by Toyota takes place on August 22- 24, 2014. Although the weekend culminates with the Transamerica Chicago Triathlon, the weekend also consists of the Life Time Kids Tri Chicago, presented by CLIF KID, and the Chicago Triathlon SuperSprint races (including the new Divvy Wave) on Saturday, August 23 at Montrose Beach.
Tri-Masters is a not-for-profit organization that empowers at-risk children via triathlon in order to teach life lessons. As our youth athletes learn to swim, bike and run, they gain skills in goal-setting, conflict resolution, respect, responsibility, self-discipline and perseverance. The greatest reason for this program’s uniqueness is that it has shown more than 1,500 inner-city youth that the world is full of opportunities if you persevere and prepare. The program’s motto is “Tri and you can master anything in life.” Nowhere is this more evident than in the eyes of the program’s youth. Learn more at www.tri-masters.org
