This Weekend: 2026 San Francisco Marathon Anticipates 33,000 Runners

July 20, 2026

Temporary Road Closures, Sold-Out Races and Record Registrations

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — (JULY 20, 2026) /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – The standard-bearer of West Coast endurance racing is back. This weekend, July 25–26, 2026, more than 33,000 runners from across the globe will take to the streets for the 2026 San Francisco Marathon. Propelled by unprecedented demand, organizers have announced major sellouts across signature distances, promising an electric atmosphere that will inject into the local economy and showcase the best of the city.

Cementing its status as a bucket-list qualifier for the AbbottWMM Age Group World Championships, high demand has driven several events to maximum capacity. Both the Full Marathon and the iconic China Airlines Bridge Half are officially sold out, with waitlists for the races now closed. Limited spots remain for the 2nd Half Marathon, the Alexi Pappas 10K, and the family-friendly 5K events.

From ultra-marathoners kicking off their 52.4-mile journey under the stars at 10:15 PM on Saturday night, to the wave of thousands crossing the Golden Gate Bridge at dawn on Sunday, the weekend represents a true celebration of community spirit and human resilience.

“The San Francisco Marathon highlights our city’s unmatched beauty, but it also serves as a crucial economic engine,” said Lauri Abrahmsen, Race Director. “Our hotels are filling up, our restaurants are bustling, and our local businesses are feeling the direct positive impact of thousands of visitors exploring our diverse neighborhoods, from the Embarcadero to the Haight.”

To ensure the safety of runners, spectators, and the general public, temporary street closures and Muni transit detours will be implemented throughout San Francisco on Saturday, July 25 and Sunday, July 26. Residents and visitors are strongly advised to plan ahead and allow for extra travel time.

The race course winds through some of the city’s most iconic sectors. Significant impacts on July 26 include:

  • The Embarcadero: Closed to vehicle traffic in both directions from 12:01 AM to 3:00 PM.
  • Golden Gate Bridge: Will remain open to vehicle traffic in both directions throughout the entire event. However, the Vista Point exit and parking lot will be closed from 4:00 AM to 10:00 AM, and bridge sidewalks will have delayed openings for pedestrians and cyclists.
  • Fisherman’s Wharf & Marina District: Jefferson Street and the westbound lanes of Bay Street/Marina Blvd will experience full closures between 5:00 AM and 10:30 AM.
  • Richmond & Sunset Districts / Golden Gate Park: Expect significant closures on 26th and 27th Avenues, and all park roads east and west of Transverse Drive between 5:00 AM and roughly noon.
  • Neighborhood Crossings: Neighborhoods including the Haight, the Mission, and Potrero Districts will see rolling closures until 12:30 PM. Northbound and southbound traffic needing to cross the city should utilize Highway 101 or Interstate 280 to avoid delays.

Local residents within impacted areas have been notified via mail and road signs.
