Suunto adds richer maps, smarter training tools and a growing library of community-built Sports Apps
July 17, 2026
July 17, 2026 /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – Suunto is releasing new software updates across the Suunto app, Suunto Race 2 and Suunto Vertical 2, adding richer map context, more practical training tools and everyday improvements for athletes and explorers. It also marks the continued growth of Open SuuntoPlus™, where community-built Sports Apps keep expanding what compatible Suunto watches can do.
Richer route planning in the Suunto app
The latest Suunto app update adds hill shading and city maps for clearer route planning. Hill shading makes terrain easier to read before heading out, while city maps add more context for runs, travel and outdoor use in urban environments.
More map detail and significant expansion to route storage
Suunto Race 2 and Suunto Vertical 2 gain updated map labels, map layer selection and expanded route storage.
Mountain peaks and water features are now easier to see on the wrist. Users can also choose map layers including contour lines, place names, street labels and points of interest. Route storage increases from 15 to 200 routes, giving users more flexibility for training, travel and outdoor adventures.
“Good navigation isn’t only about the map on your wrist. It’s about the whole journey, from planning your route to following it with confidence in the field,” says Janne Kallio, Head of Digital Ecosystem at Suunto. “In April we delivered one of our biggest navigation updates ever, and this release builds straight on it, with richer, clearer maps in the Suunto app where you plan and more map detail on the watch where you navigate.”
New training tools and watch improvements
On Suunto Race 2 and Suunto Vertical 2, vertical gain can now be used as a training target for trail running, mountain training and activities on varied terrain. The watch update also includes tides, QR code pairing and faster SuuntoPlus™ app syncing.
Community-built Sports Apps add more ways to train and explore
More than 40 community-built Sports Apps are now available through Open SuuntoPlus™, alongside more than 250 partner integrations in one growing ecosystem. Since launching in March, the platform has empowered creators to build unique, athlete-driven sport solutions for Suunto watches, giving users fresh ways to train, explore and connect. Approved apps are available in the Made by Suunto Community section of the SuuntoPlus™ Store and run directly on compatible Suunto watches.
“For the people wearing our watches, Open SuuntoPlus™ makes every Suunto more specialized, personal and powerful over time,” says Kallio. “Because the community builds these Sports Apps, the watch can evolve faster than any firmware cycle, from ultra-running pacing and climbing intervals to altitude adaptation and exploration tools. With more than 30 apps already available and feedback going straight to developers, every compatible watch keeps getting more capable and more valuable to the person wearing it.”
The latest Suunto app updates began rolling out from June 30, 2026. The software update for Suunto Race 2 and Suunto Vertical 2 will begin rolling out from July 14, 2026.

About Suunto
Suunto is a Finnish brand, established in 1936. It was founded by Finnish inventor Tuomas Vohlonen, who pioneered a new standard for navigational precision. That same year, his innovation – a field compass – was stronger, steadier, and more accurate than any other handheld navigational tool of its time. It was the first of many Suunto products built to withstand the harsh conditions of our native Finland.
In the near century since, Tuomas’s spirit of innovation has continued to chart Suunto’s course. From some of history’s first dive computers and high-altitude wrist altimeters to today’s GPS watches, Suunto remains a trusted companion for outdoor adventurers across the globe.
Supporting explorers, athletes, and weekend warriors alike remains our core mission – providing the tools to dive deeper, climb higher, and push the limits of human potential.
