Surf City Marathon and Half Marathon Kicks Off the Big Game Weekend with Running Activities for Everyone

January 24th, 2018

January 24, 2018 – (Huntington Beach, CA) – Motiv Sports officially announced several new activities to celebrate the Surf City Marathon and big game weekend with something for everyone. On Saturday, the new Cowabunga Beach Challenge for Kids obstacle course will take place and the local favorite 5K Run and Walk returns after a brief hiatus.

On Sunday, the “Sand Bar,” sponsored by Sam Adams and serving its newest beer, Sam ’76, and Truly Spiked & Sparkling hard sparkling water, will be open for adults 21 and over to enjoy a cold beverage and watch the race.

“This year’s event weekend is a flashback to Surf City’s roots with the return of the 5K run/walk,” said race director, Guy Terriff.  “Our incredible community of runners love the fast feel of the course and beachfront views. With the kids obstacle course on Saturday and The Surf City Sand Bar on Sunday, it’s going to be a great mix of music, surf, sand and beer.”

Sam ’76 will be available in The Sand Bar on race day to participants and drinkers alike to kick back and enjoy this refreshing union of lager and ale. Brewed using a unique process, Sam ’76 captures the best attributes of these two beer styles and creates the perfect brew to fill drinker’s glasses during social drinking occasions – from a beach day to barbecue to Sunday funday.

Truly Spiked & Sparkling, also available, is a clean, crisp and refreshing hard sparkling water with a hint of fruit. With just 100 calories, 1 gram of sugar, and 5% ABV, Truly Spiked & Sparkling is crafted with simple, naturally gluten-free ingredients.

Clif also returns as a sponsor and the Clif Bar Pace Team helps runners stay on track to run their race. They act as a friend, a coach, and a mentor throughout a race.

The following provides more detailed information about all the events taking place Friday, February 2nd through Sunday, February 4th, 2018.

The participants for the Surf City Half Marathon and Marathon span from all over the U.S. and locally in Orange County, California.  Some of the runners participating include:

Christine & Charles Mayfield – When they registered for the 2018 Surf City Half Marathon it was because they wanted to complete a half marathon together, which is something they’ve never done as husband and wife. On Monday, October 2, 2017 the reason changed. It became one of healing their bodies, minds, and hearts, not just to improve their healthy lifestyle. On October 1, 2017 while enjoying the Route 91 Harvest Music Festival with their three children, Charles was shot. He was hit twice, but is doing very well. Completing the half marathon will be another victory for them as they move forward and live each day with gratitude, hope, and respect for those whose lives were lost.

Laura Fitzgerald – Has had two back surgeries in the past eight years and her last one was a L5S1 fusion. The surgery saved her life and this will be her 21st half marathon in six years. It reminds her of how blessed she is to not be in pain and she just needs to keep moving.

Peter Bergmann – Is 22 and attends USC.  He is running the half marathon in a fast food costume and hopes to beat the Guinness Book of World Records fastest time for running in a costume.

Denise Sappington – Is 55 years old from Yorba Linda and started running Surf City with her son who was on the High School Cross Country team. This is her 4th time running the half marathon. Her son is now attending the Merchant Marine Academy and is in his second year.  This is her way of supporting him during this intense College program.

Cliff Walker – Is local to Orange County and runs marathons in his full fireman gear.  He is running Surf City for the first time and runs to honor all fire fighters.

Famun Nabi – Is running so that he can run together with his daughter; her first marathon/half marathon.

Robert Taylor – Is 64 and he never swam, biked or ran ever. His son is an elite class Ironman and he inspired him to get involved four years ago when he retired. So he bought a bike, took swim lessons and went to work. He lost 30 pounds and feels better than ever.  He’s competed in six Sprints, five 5Ks and Surf City will be his sixth half marathon.

Jennifer Obenberger – After Jennifer was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2015 she decided to complete her first half marathon with Team Challenge to fight back. Since then it has been pain, exhaustion, hospital visits, and no improvements. Her last option was surgery. Jennifer had her colon removed in September, currently has an ileostomy bag, and joined Team Challenge to train for the 2018 Surf City USA half marathon. Learn how you can fight alongside Jennifer to make every mile more meaningful. .

Rishika Murthy – In early 2005, Rishika was just a few months away from my college graduation. She started losing weight and having terrible stomach pain and at the age of 22 was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. For the next 11 years she was in constant pain, and after another colonoscopy in 2016 she received the news she would need surgery to remove her colon. But Rishika is a fighter and carried on, but after the surgery they discovered she had colon cancer and would need 6-months of chemo. She will be with Team Challenge and will be running her second race at the Surf City Half Marathon.

Mycle Brandy – Is a four-time Stroke survivor walking to raise awareness of the dangers of a sedentary lifestyle. This is his third Surf City Half and they have all been for the American Stroke Assn. This one is for the Wounded Warrior Project and the Brain Injury Association of America. The 2018 Surf City Half is his final time-up before he continues his Rockaway Beach, Oregon 2 Rockaway Beach, New York Walk Across America. This will be his 4th walk across America.  Please see his site at Looking forward to the race!!
