26.2-mile course will feature new sights and alleviate community impact; Rascal Flatts to headline post race Toyota Rock ‘n’ Roll Concert Series; Race will celebrate five year anniversary the weekend of Nov. 5 -8
SAVANNAH, GA. – September 16, 2015 –Rock ‘n’ Roll Savannah Marathon & ½ Marathon has announced a revamped marathon course for the 2015 event. The course changes were made to help alleviate traffic impacts in the west part of the city and will take runners past the historic homes of Derenne Ave. Marathon weekend returns November 5 – 8, celebrating five years of Rock ‘n’ Roll in Savannah.
“After months of planning with our partners in Savannah (Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department, Savannah State University, Jenkins High School, Memorial Hospital and the city managers) we are excited to showcase a new marathon route,” said Ted Metellus, Director of Course Operations. The goal was to keep the essences of what make our event special while highlighting new areas with minimal impact to the community.”
The marathon, half marathon and two-person half marathon relay will once again start on Bay Street at Bull Street and finish at Forsyth Park. The three distances will travel together before splitting just past mile 11. Runners will once again experience charming town squares, historic buildings and canopies of Spanish moss covered trees.
“We are pleased with the updated marathon course and the convenience it will bring to both runners and residents,” said Ben Wilder, Director, Savannah Sports Council. “The course will highlight new areas of the city while still showing off scenic locations such as Daffin Park and Savannah State University. We look forward to showcasing even more areas and attractions in our beautiful city.”
In true Rock ‘n’ Roll fashion, live bands, enthusiastic cheerleaders and spectators will line the race route, concluding with a celebratory finish line festival and post race Toyota Rock ‘n’ Roll Concert Series headlined by Rascal Flatts at Forsyth Park.
The event will once again feature two-days of running with the marathon, half-marathon and two-person half marathon relay on Saturday and the Rock ‘n’ Roll 5K and One Mile run on Sunday.
