Rock ‘n’ Roll Liverpool Announces Marathon Course for Inaugural Race

Event to debut Sunday, May 25, 2014; Runners to start and finish along the city’s waterfront

The sights and scenery of Liverpool will be on display for thousands of runners from around the world as Rock ‘n’ Roll Liverpool Marathon & ½ Marathon debuts on Sunday, May 25, 2014.

Race organizers have announced the route for the inaugural race, which will showcase Liverpool’s magnificent waterfront. Both the marathon and half-marathon courses will start and finish along the waterfront, featuring scenic views of the stunning docks, rich architecture, spectacular museums and historic commercial districts along the course. The race will begin at the Albert Dock, one of the most visited attractions in the UK and a World Heritage Site, and will pass through the celebrated Cavern Quarter, where The Beatles rose to prominence in the 1960s.

The marathon course includes the famous Liverpool and Everton Football Clubs, along with the city’s beautiful parks including Stanley Park, Sefton Park and Otterspool Park. It also sees participants taking in one of the most unique experiences along the route as they run through the streets of Europe’s oldest Chinese community and beneath the Chinese Arch – the largest outside of China.

“The marathon course really offers runners a beautiful balance of urban and magnificent park views to highlight Liverpool’s unique neighborhoods, tree-lined streets and majestic waterfront that will give participants a true taste of the best Liverpool has to offer,” said Tom Godfrey, General Manager of Competitor Group Europe, which operates the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series. “The springtime temperatures will also make this an ideal race and we’re excited to showcase this beautiful city to our runners.”

Liverpool City Council’s Assistant Mayor and Cabinet Member for culture and tourism, Councillor Wendy Simon, said: “There is already a huge amount of anticipation around the Rock ‘n Roll event coming to the city, and this is only going to be heightened now the route has been announced.

“Liverpool is full of iconic landmarks and this course takes in so many it is bound to have massive appeal with residents and visitors alike – there’s nothing like having some fantastic sights to distract you from the physical challenge of a long race!”

The marathon will cap off a full weekend of events, with music taking center stage throughout. Bands will play live music each mile of the course, along with fanfare and entertainment positioned along the route. Upon completing their 26.2 or 13.1 mile accomplishment, runners will gather with friends and family at the finish line festival and a post-race concert which will take place at the Liverpool Echo Arena Complex.

About The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series

Organized by Competitor Group, the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series is the ‘World’s Largest Running Series’ with more than 500,000 runners taking part in thirty-two destination events around the world. What started as a simple idea in 1998—the idea of making running fun– soon transformed the U.S. running landscape by infusing the race course with live bands, cheer teams and entertaining water stations. The outdoor festivals encapsulate cities in their entirety and culminate with a finish line festival featuring a concert headlined by some of the best music acts around. Over the 16-year history of the series, charity partners have raised more than $278 million through the events for a variety of worthy causes. Today, the series of entertainment themed marathons and half-marathons has spread to 31 cities around the world and continues to enjoy great appeal for the traveling runner, tremendous local support and has firmly established itself as a dynamic running platform.
