Point-to-Point Kaiser Permanente Thrive Half Marathon Returns to San Diego

Benefiting Make-A-Wish® San Diego

Kaiser Permanente and Easy Day Sports of Coronado, CA are pleased to bring the Kaiser Permanente Thrive Half Marathon & 5K back to San Diego for its third year. As the newest half marathon in San Diego, the event has seen positive reviews and participant experiences for the past two years. The Kaiser Permanente Thrive Half Marathon and 5K will be held on Saturday, November 2, 2019, benefiting Make-A-Wish San Diego.

“We love how this event encourages the San Diego community to get active and thrive,” comments Rodger Dougherty, Kaiser Permanente San Diego Senior Director of Public Affairs. “Healthy eating, active living, and giving back are core to us at Kaiser Permanente. We invite all San Diegans to step into this with us and join us for Year Three.”

The 2019 half marathon course again offers an exclusive point-to-point destination route. Runners will start near the Kaiser Permanente San Diego Medical Center in Kearny Mesa and enjoy fast stretches along Friars Road, minor elevation changes, views of Mission Bay along Ingraham Bridge and a finish line with an ocean breeze at Ski Beach in Mission Bay.

“We created a unique course that offers a route that many local runners will not have run before,” comments Jamie Monroe, race director. “Keeping true with San Diego’s biggest selling point, we are excited once again about leading runners to finish with waterfront views.”

Benefiting Make-A-Wish San Diego, the Kaiser Permanente Thrive Half Marathon & 5K is an opportunity for participants to take part knowing they are directly supporting children diagnosed with a critical illness whose wishes are granted by Make-A-Wish San Diego.

In 2018, Make-A-Wish San Diego granted 212 wishes, creating positive and lasting change in the lives of children. Make-A-Wish beneficiary Mia, age 13, has chronic lung disease. She wished for a new best friend, a puppy. A Labradoodle named Oliver was her wish come true. Mia’s parents shared that adding Oliver to their family will greatly enhance Mia’s daily quality of life and bring her so much joy. Events like the Kaiser Permanente Thrive Half Marathon & 5K make granting more wishes like Mia’s possible. Each year, Kaiser Permanente Thrive Half Marathon has committed to donate the amount to grant one wish for a local child. This goal has been surpassed each year, and the event looks forward to granting another wish in 2019.

“We are incredibly grateful for the generous support of the Kaiser Permanente Thrive Half Marathon, and our long-standing community partnership with Kaiser Permanente,” said Chris Sichel, Make-A-Wish San Diego President & CEO. “We look forward to another successful event raising funds to help grant wishes for local wish kids battling critical illnesses.”

The Kaiser Permanente Thrive Half Marathon & 5K event offers an opportunity for all ages and fitness levels, including a half marathon, 5K, Thrive Kids Run, and Thrive Expo featuring local health and wellness vendors. Live music, free samples, and San Diego smiles are sure to be in abundance. Exclusive group rates are available for corporate groups and others of ten individuals or more.
