P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Celebrates 10 Years Running; Adds Bike Tour, Mini Marathon

November 7th, 2012

1,000 bicyclists to tour full marathon course prior to race start; 2-person half marathon relay, mini-marathon distances also available; Registration available online at Competitor.com

Phoenix, AZ – November 7, 2012 – As Arizona’s premier running event returns to celebrate its 10th anniversary, participants can get their wheels spinning as the P.F. Chang’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon & ½ Marathon announces the addition of a Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Bike Tour.

The Bike Tour will take place prior to the marathon and half marathon on Sunday, January 20, 2013. Cyclists are invited to tour the full marathon course, riding closed streets through Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe. Bike Tour participants will enjoy the full Rock ‘n’ Roll experience, with on-course entertainment, finishers medals, t-shirts and the rocking post-race concert at Sun Devil Stadium.

The 2013 event also offers a 5.4 mile Mini Marathon and a 2-person half marathon relay, where participants can share the 13.1 mile distance with a friend or family member.

The race will once again feature two start lines, with the half-marathon starting in Tempe and touring beautiful Scottsdale, Skysong and Papago Park. Full marathoners (and the Bike Tour) will start at Cityscape in downtown Phoenix before heading along Indian School Road and touring Old Town Scottsdale. Runners on both courses will enjoy a downhill finish, crossing the scenic Mill Avenue Bridge before reaching the familiar finish line at Sun Devil Stadium, where runners can relax and enjoy the finish line festival and headliner concert.

“Offering a Bike Tour and Mini Marathon allows more people to participate and experience the fun and excitement of a Rock ‘n’ Roll event in a new way,” said Alan Culpepper, Course Designer and U.S. Olympian.  “Many athletes love to bike and run, and beginners who aren’t ready for 13.1 or 26.2 miles have options to try distance running on a smaller scale and challenge themselves to do something they never thought possible.”

The bike ride will not be timed, and will be limited to top speeds of 20 mph and minimum speeds of 10 mph. Helmets are required. Riders will also have access to a post-race bike check while they enjoy the finish line festival and beer garden, where all participants can savor a free beer.

Bike Tour registration is limited to 1,000 participants. The first 100 registrants will receive a special $50 price. After that, registration is available for $65.

Race weekend kicks off with a free Health & Fitness Expo, where runners can find over 100 vendors, interactive clinics with running experts and elite athletes, and much more. The Expo takes place at the Phoenix Convention Center on Friday, January 18th and Saturday, January 19th and is free and open to the public.

Information and registrations for all distances is available online at Competitor.com.
