Outspoken: Women in Triathlon Summit announces first-ever Women in Triathlon Awards

September 24, 2019

Nominations are now open in a number of categories including Coach of the Year, Race Director of the Year and Outspoken Woman of the Year

Denver, Colorado, USA The producers of the Outspoken: Women in Triathlon Summit are pleased to announce the first annual Women in Triathlon Awards Banquet in Tempe, Arizona at 6pm, Saturday November 16th, 2019. The banquet, hosted by IRONMAN’s Women For Tri, will be a celebration of the many women who have contributed to growing women’s inclusion and equity in the sport in 2019. The awards ceremony will be part of the Outspoken Summit that spans the weekend of November 15th-17th.

Summit co-founder and Ironman Champion, Dr. Sara Gross says: “It’s strange that triathlon doesn’t have a dedicated awards banquet to celebrate the many incredible women in our sport. I’m almost as excited about this as I was when we launched the summit last year.”

Dr. Lisa Ingarfield, triathlon coach and Summit co-founder agrees: “We rarely acknowledge women for the monumental contributions they make to sport and to our lives. They are often taken for granted, working in the background without much recognition. The Outspoken Summit Awards Banquet aims to change that.”

Nominations can now be made in the following categories:

  • Athlete of the Year
  • Coach of the Year
  • Race Director(s) of the Year
  • Outstanding Media Contribution
  • The Bethany Rutledge Memorial Award
  • Outspoken Woman of the Year

The Bethany Rutledge Memorial Award was created to celebrate the life of Bethany Rutledge who passed away suddenly earlier this year. As co-owner of the Energy Lab cycling studio and Atlanta Triathlon Club, Rutledge was an active leader in the Atlanta triathlon community.  She often spoke of how small acts of kindness can lead to greater changes in life. This special award will be given to a woman who has affected many people in small ways in the field of triathlon.

Rutledge’s close friend and podcast-cohost Kathryn Taylor is grateful she will be remembered in this way:

“In her 37-years, Bethany left an outsized legacy on the world. She believed that triathlon was a vehicle to help people change their lives and took every opportunity to help women in their triathlon journey. There’s no better way to honor her legacy than to celebrate other women who are making the same impact.”
