November 2nd Grand Canyon Trail Half Marathon Announced

September 24, 2019

Partnership between Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce and Run Tucson

The Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with Randy Accetta of Run Tucson to offer their inaugural Grand Canyon Trail Half Marathon, 5k or 1- mile family fun run on November 2nd.  The event will start in the Town of Tusayan – located just 7 miles from one of the 7 Wonders of the World, the South Rim of the Grand Canyon.

The run will take place on Saturday, November 2nd on the forest roads and trails in the Kaibab National Forrest, which surrounds the Town of Tusayan and borders Grand Canyon National Park. This is a high elevation race with a starting elevation of 6,595 feet, a max elevation 6729 Ft and a gain of 546 ft. Temperature ranging from mid 40’s to mid 60’s should make this trail run ideal.

“We’re excited to be hosting this event in early November, “says Laura Chastain, General Manager Grand Canyon Chamber and Visitor’s Bureau.  “The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is open year-round and November is a beautiful time to visit. Crowds are smaller and temperatures are great. We would like to encourage everyone to make this a family adventure – come a few days early and the kids can enjoy our annual Trunk or Treat event on Halloween in addition to the weekend run events.”

Every participant receives a race shirt and a special souvenir medallion produced by Ashworth Awards.  By capping the field at 500, the race organizers will ensure an intimate running experience, with a pre-race motivational talk at the Tusayan IMAX Theater, a race-day pancake breakfast produced by the Tusayan Fire Department, and post-race sightseeing opportunities.

“It’s always a bit tricky to advertise a Grand Canyon race when you’re not allowed onto the trails of the National Park,” says race director Accetta.  “We are delighted to work with the Kaibab National Forest on the course – and, of course, the Grand Canyon Chamber of Commerce is the perfect partner for this event, given that their whole goal is to support visitors to the Canyon.”
