Monarch Migration Run Brings Its Butterfly and Migration Themes Into Interactive Race Swag

A color-changing medal highlights the monarch, while a sun-activated tote reveals more butterflies to represent migration.
NORMAN, Okla. /ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – The inaugural Monarch Migration Run in Norman, Oklahoma, is bringing its butterfly-focused event identity into two different pieces of race merchandise: a custom color-changing medal and a sun-activated tote. Designed by Magic Race Swag, the two pieces interpret the event’s monarch and migration themes in different ways.
The Monarch Migration 5K & 1 Mile Caterpillar Crawl will take place September 27 at Ruby Grant Park, an important stopover habitat for monarch butterflies during their fall migration to Mexico. The event celebrates the monarch journey and the role of the local park in supporting it, while also kicking off Norman’s annual Monarchs in the Park celebration and supporting pollinator conservation.
For the medal, the monarch itself is the starting point. Instead of placing a butterfly graphic on a conventional medal, the medal takes the shape of a butterfly. Indoors, the butterfly remains clean white. In direct sunlight, it changes to a warm orange, bringing one of the monarch’s most recognizable colors into the finisher experience.
The ribbon continues the same visual connection, with orange butterflies woven throughout the white pattern to echo the medal’s color.
The tote takes a different approach. Its design begins with one large monarch butterfly on a predominantly white surface, with warm orange shoulder straps connecting it visually to the medal. Additional butterflies are hidden across the white areas of the tote in different sizes, poses, and directions. When exposed to sunlight, those butterflies appear, changing the design from one prominent butterfly into a larger group.
Together, the two pieces use different design treatments to express two connected ideas behind the event: the monarch and its migration.
“The technology works best when it has a reason to be there,” said Ryan Zhu, founder of Magic Race Swag. “For the Monarch Migration Run, the event already gave us two strong ideas to work with. The monarch and the migration naturally led to two different design directions.”
The Monarch Migration 5K & 1 Mile Caterpillar Crawl will begin at 9:00 a.m. on September 27, 2026, at Ruby Grant Park in Norman, Oklahoma. Participants will receive a custom monarch-themed medal, bib, and color-changing monarch swag bag, along with entrance to the Monarchs in the Park celebration following the race.
