Magic Race Swag Introduces Color-Changing Technology to Custom Challenge Coins

Created to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary, the coin uses sunlight to shift its colors from soft white to red on the front and soft white to blue on the reverse.

/ENDURANCE SPORTSWIRE/ – Magic Race Swag has applied color-changing technology to challenge coins for the first time, creating a commemorative piece for Concord, North Carolina Parks & Recreation to mark America’s 250th anniversary.

The coin carries the theme “250 YEARS STRONG” on the front, while the reverse features a veteran-focused design, with a helmet, crossed rifles and boots alongside the two-line inscription “VETERAN” above “U.S.”

Both sides incorporate the color-changing effect. In sunlight, the front starts soft white and turns red, while the reverse starts soft white and turns blue. Indoors, both sides return to white.

The transitions were designed to reinforce the coin’s existing red, white and blue color story, making natural sunlight part of the design rather than simply adding an effect.

“This was our first time using color-changing on a challenge coin,” said Ryan Zhu, founder of Magic Race Swag. “We weren’t looking to add the effect just because we could. The coin already had a strong color story, so using sunlight to bring those colors out felt like a natural fit.”

The project demonstrates how color-changing technology can extend beyond race shirts and medals. When a commemorative or event product already has a clear visual theme and color story, a sun-activated color change can become part of the design itself.
