Austin Athletes Joel Rosinbum and Damon Clifford Prepare to Compete as Part of Life Time Tri CapTex on Memorial Day
Life Time Athletic Events, a division of Life Time – The Healthy Way of Life Company (NYSE:LTM) will host the USA Paratriathlon National Championships in conjunction with the Life Time Tri CapTex on Monday, May 27 at 7:00am at Auditorium Shores in Austin,Texas.
For the second consecutive year Austin will welcome the country’s top paratriathletes as they compete for the national title on a sprint-distance course which includes a 750-meter swim, 20-kilometer bike and 5-kilometer run. Among those participating are Austin residents Joel Rosinbum and Damon Clifford.
Rosinbum (32) paralyzed his right arm in a ski accident in 2007. The accident left Rosinbum, a college athlete, frustrated and depressed. Focusing on the competitive opportunities available to him through paratriathlons saved him. “It really is a story of perseverance and adapting to things and finding ways to make things work,” Rosinbum said.
Rosinbum, nick named the “Left Arm Bandit,” has enough grip strength to control the bike but uses only one arm to swim and wears a sling to control his left arm while running. Among Rosinbum’s accomplishments are two national titles and a 13th place finish in the World Championships in 2012.
Clifford (34) is newer to the sport. Clifford broke his right ankle when he was 16. After numerous surgeries and years of pain, doctors decided to amputate Clifford’s leg two years ago. An endurance athlete at heart, Clifford refuses to let his circumstance keep him from his passion. Clifford swims with one leg and uses two sport specific prosthetic legs to get him through the bicycle and running portion of the triathlon.
Last year Clifford completed the Life Time Tri CapTex, an Ironman and a 50k trail run. “One of my favorite quotes is by John Wooden and he says, “Don’t let what you can’t do interfere with what you can do.”
Athletes wanting to compete in the USA Paratriathlon National Championship must be officially classified and placed in a USA Paratriathlon Category as outlined in USA Triathlon’s Competitive Rules. Information on athlete eligibility for the event is available on usatriathlon.org.
