Olympian and Decorated Long Distance Runner Kara Goucher Makes Trail Racing Debut at Leadville Trail Marathon
Leadville, Colo., June 13, 2019 — On Saturday, June 15, The Leadville Trail Marathon and Heavy Half Marathon produced by Life Time will kick off the famed ultra endurance event season in Leadville, Colo.
“It’s a special time of year in Leadville as we prepare to begin another epic Leadville Race Series season with The Leadville Trail Marathon and Heavy Half,” said Ken Chlouber, Founder of the Leadville Race Series. “The Heavy Half and Trail Marathon are some of my favorite events because the races are a perfect introduction for participants to experience the welcoming spirit of Leadville while challenging themselves on the iconic and beautiful Leadville terrain.”
The Leadville Trail Marathon and 15.5-mile Heavy Half Marathon kick off the Colorado portion of the Leadville Race Series. The Leadville Trail Marathon is a qualifier for the Leadville Trail 100 Run and the courses also offer a perfect introduction for those looking to attempt other ultra-endurance events like the Silver Rush 50 RunSilver Rush 50 Run. The Leadville Trail Marathon is the first event in the famed Leadman/Leadwoman competition, where athletes participate in five Leadville Race Series events throughout the summer.
Toeing the line this year at the Leadville Marathon is a strong women’s field including famed long-distance runner and two-time Olympian, Kara Goucher, Addie Bracy, 2nd place finisher at the 2018 Leadville Trail 100, Brittany Charboneau, 17th place finisher at the NYC Marathon and Tara Richardson, winner of the 2018 Grand Traverse Trail Run.
Competing again in the Leadman competition this year is longtime participant Dave Mackey who seriously injured his leg in a 2015 trail running accident and finished 12th in The Leadman Series in 2018 with a prosthetic leg. Leadville local Wesley Sandoval, Leadman record holder, is also returning in an attempt to reclaim his crown.
With the record-setting snowfall in the Colorado Rockies this past winter and snow levels on the existing course reaching 20-feet high, the route for the Leadville Marathon and Heavy Half will be changed this year.
“The snow this past season has been incredible. It’s the most I’ve seen here in Leadville in 50 years!” said Merilee Maupin, Co-Founder of the Leadville Race Series.
“Despite the massive snowfall, The Leadville Race Series crew is committed to hosting the event and has been working tirelessly to create a new course,” said Michael Melley, Vice President of Operations at Life Time. “The new route went through 12 revisions in order to include spectacular views with significant elevation gain, while maintaining the same start and finish location. We can assure you that the race will still embody the iconic experience of all Leadville Race Series events.”
Both races begin on Saturday, June 15 at 8 a.m. at Sixth Street Gym, 124 E. Sixth Street, Leadville, Colorado.
