Southern California’s premier fall marathon commemorates milestone anniversary with fresh, new look and guaranteed fun the weekend of October 11 - 13, 2019
LONG BEACH – April 24, 2019 – The JetBlue Long Beach Marathon and Half Marathon will celebrate 35 Years Running with a fresh look inspired by California’s urban coast and three days of events on the weekend of October 11-13, 2019.
The Long Beach waterfront guarantees a mostly flat, fast course, while the perfect seasonal conditions add to the probability of setting a new personal record. More than just a weekend of running, the race welcomes athletes of all abilities, from those looking to test themselves at the marathon distance, to runners and walkers who are plenty happy enough to finish a half marathon or run a 5k through an aquarium. The 35th anniversary celebration will highlight 15 runners, each of whom have finished the marathon all 34 years.
“The JetBlue Long Beach Marathon has been a fixture of the region’s running scene for 35 years and 2019 is going to be special in a number of ways as we celebrate this milestone anniversary with the passionate and amazing ‘Run Long Beach’ community,” said Diane Malette, Marketing Manager for the marathon. “It’s the inspiring reasons why people run, the refreshing vibe of the race and its gritty host city that makes Long Beach home of the premier fall marathon and half-marathon in Southern California.”
Event week for the 2019 JetBlue Long Beach Marathon and Half Marathon kicks off with a Health & Fitness Expo at the Long Beach Convention & Entertainment Center, just steps from the city’s eclectic downtown restaurants, shops and tourist attractions. The expo is free and open to the public on Friday, October 11 and continues into Saturday, October 12. All race participants will visit the expo to pick up their race bibs and browse over 100 exhibitors featuring free samples, the latest in running gear and sports apparel, as well as a series of interactive clinics.
The running gets started on Saturday morning, October 12, when thousands of future marathoners ages 5 – 12 will take to the pavement at the Aquarium of the Pacific 1-Mile Kids Fun Run at 9:00 am. The kids race will be preceded by the Aquarium of the Pacific 5k at 7:00am, as spectators are joined by Charlie the sea otter, Lou the turtle, and even a group of seahorses lining the race route which runs through the largest aquarium in Southern California. New in 2019, participants may bundle their half marathon or marathon registration with the Aquarium of the Pacific 5k.
The main events take place on Sunday, October 13 with the marathon and 20-mile Bike Tour starting at 6:00 am along the iconic Shoreline Drive, which hugs the ocean and runs parallel to the beach. Participants can bundle the Bike Tour with the half marathon, 5k or both for an unforgettable endurance challenge during marathon weekend.
The half-marathon starts at 7:30 am sharing the same world-class course as the marathon. Taking in all that the City of Long Beach has to offer, runners will enjoy an upgraded experience, course adjustments and an epic start line. Known as one of California’s most scenic events, all race participants experience the beautiful Long Beach waterfront, run past the historic Queen Mary, through Shoreline Village by the quintessential shops and landmarks that make Long Beach a one-of-a-kind destination.
After running next to the Pacific Ocean on the flat beach path and through Belmont Shore toward Marine Stadium, marathoners complete a 5K loop around Long Beach State University campus as cheerleaders, sororities, fraternities, clubs and student organizations line the course to encourage runners. With 6.2 miles to go, runners head back towards Ocean Boulevard for a fast finish and post-race festival with live music, food trucks and a beer garden. The coastal course is flat and fast, perfect for a Boston Qualifier or running a personal best.
The American Cancer Society has joined the 18 local charities as a national featured charity partner this year as part of its DetermiNation program. Athletes running at Long Beach will help fund the American Cancer Society’s mission to fight cancer from every angle. Proceeds will support programs to help to save lives, celebrate lives, and lead the fight for a world without cancer. All DetermiNation runners, will receive a free entry into the marathon or half-marathon and will enjoy an unforgettable experience that makes a big impact on the lives of individuals affected by cancer.
