ITU Action Continues with Saturday’s Sarasota Pan American Cup

Nearly 70 international athletes set for Olympic-distance event

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — High-speed, draft-legal triathlon action continues in Florida for a second straight weekend with Saturday’s inaugural Sarasota ITU Triathlon Pan American Cup at Nathan Benderson Park.

The field of approximately 70 international athletes will cover an Olympic-distance course featuring a two-lap, 1,500-meter swim, an eight-lap, 40-kilometer bike and a four-lap, 10-kilometer run. The men’s race is slated for noon Eastern, followed by the women at 2:30 p.m. Eastern. Live timing is available via

Many of the athletes who competed at the March 9 Clermont ITU Sprint Triathlon Pan American Cup will make the trek to Sarasota for this weekend’s race. Headlining that group for the U.S. is Kaitlin Donner (Gainesville, Fla.), who placed third last weekend, while Alicia Kaye (Clermont, Fla.), Katie Hursey (Hampstead, Md.) and Sara McLarty (Gainesville, Fla.) are also expected to race after earning top-10 finishes in Clermont. Kaleb VanOrt (Mishawaka, Ind.) leads the U.S. men into Sarasota after placing eighth in Clermont. Luke Farkas (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Joe Maloy (Wildwood Crest, N.J.) and Tommy Zaferes (Santa Cruz, Calif.) finished just outside the top 10 last weekend and are on the start list for this weekend’s race, as is 2012 USA Triathlon Rookie of the Year Lukas Verzbicas (Colorado Springs, Colo.). International standouts slated to compete in Sarasota include four London Olympians — Paula Findlay of Canada, Vendula Frintova and Radka Vodickova of the Czech Republic and Portugal’s Bruno Pais. Joao Pereira of Portugal is fresh off a fourth-place finish in Clermont, while Spain’s Carolina Routier was sixth on the women’s side.

In addition to the Sarasota ITU Pan American Cup, the NBP Challenge features a men’s USA Triathlon Under-25 Elite Development Race, as well as an Age-Group Mixed Relay. Visit for full event details.
