IRONMAN 70.3 Panama to return on August 23, 2020

TAMPA, Fla. / PANAMA CITY, Panama – IRONMAN, a Wanda Sports Group company, announced today the return to Panama with the IRONMAN® 70.3® Panama triathlon, which will be held on Sunday, Aug. 23, 2020. Last raced in 2016, the popular Central American destination race will once again offer athletes from around the world the opportunity to experience Panama’s unique scenery and culture through the IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon. General registration will open Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2019.

“The growth of IRONMAN® across Central America is higher than it has ever been and the return of IRONMAN 70.3  to Panama is yet again a testament to the success of the sport and impact of the brand in the region,” said Joanna Jordan, Managing Director of Latin America for IRONMAN. “The demand for IRONMAN races continues to flourish throughout Latin America, and Panama City is sure to become a bucket list destination for our athletes.”

In the past, elite athletes such as Javier Gomez Noya, Lionel Sanders, Chris Lieto, Heather Jackson, Michelle Vesterby, Natascha Badmann and many others have made their way atop the podium in Panama. The return of IRONMAN 70.3 triathlon is a great opportunity to showcase the region while furthering the sport of triathlon in Latin America and one of its hubs, Panama.

The capital of Panama is a modern city framed by the Pacific Ocean and man-made Panama Canal, considered one of the seven wonders of the modern world. Casco Viejo, its cobblestoned historic center, is famed for colonial-era landmarks like the neoclassical Palacio Presidential Palace and bougainvillea-filled plazas lined with restaurants, cafes and bars. The Miraflores Locks offers views of ships traversing the canal and operates as an essential shipping route linking the Atlantic and Pacific.

The race will begin on the Pacific Ocean at the Panama Canal waterway. Athletes will swim 1.2-miles (1.9-km), in a point-to-point swim course. They will follow that by hopping on their bikes for a 56-mile (90-km) three-loop ride along the Cinta Costera and Calzada de Amador, where athletes will be able to admire the contrast of the Casco Viejo and skyscrapers of the Panama skyline. They will then transition in the Biomuseo for a 13.1-mile (21-km) two-loop run through the Calzada de Amador. Participants will have panoramic views of Panama City and the Panama Canal staged by the Puente de Las Americas Bridge.

“This is a great time for endurance sports in Central America and we are very excited to be the reason IRONMAN 70.3 is back in Panama,” said Jorge Urrutia, Managing Director of PTYATHLONS S.A. and local operator of the event. “With this, we are making an international event accessible to individuals from all corners of the region, as it will attract international participants — so it is a great opportunity to enhance Panama as a sports hub. We strongly believe that every participant in this event will be a celebrity and role model, whose story will inspire many to be part of endurance events. This event marks a milestone in our project to create a sports hub in Panama.”

The end of August is the perfect time of the year to host the race with warm tropical weather conditions and temperatures averaging 84°F (29-32°C).

The 2020 IRONMAN 70.3 Panama triathlon is an age group-only event and will offer qualifying slots for the 2021 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in St. George, Utah.

On top of the individual category, the 2020 IRONMAN 70.3 Panama race will offer a relay team option, providing an opportunity for first timers to take part in the IRONMAN 70.3 event.
