Inaugural race to take place on October 21, 2017; General registration opens on May 4, 2017
TAMPA, Fla./SANTIAGO, Chile (May 2, 2017) – IRONMAN, a Wanda Sports Holdings company, alongside Club Deportivo Universidad Católica, announced today the addition of the Skechers Performance IRONMAN® 70.3® Coquimbo Triathlon in Coquimbo, Chile. The inaugural edition of the race will take place on October 21, 2017.
Coquimbo, located north of Chile’s capital city, Santiago, offers a beautiful backdrop for the new event venue. The South American country is already known for the HERBALIFE IRONMAN 70.3 Pucon triathlon held in southern Chile. Athletes will have the opportunity to race through a region filled with stunning coastlines and star-filled skies nearby the Elqui Valley, known for its vibrant energy, fruitful vineyards, historical mining sites and some of the world’s most significant observatories.
“We are very happy to have this new IRONMAN 70.3 event in Chile, in a beautiful territory that will create a challenging and unique race for the athletes,” said Guido Cornejo, Skechers Performance IRONMAN 70.3 Coquimbo Race Director. “We have accomplished a dream that has been long in the making.”
Athletes will start with a two-loop swim against the backdrop of the Port of Coquimbo, the second largest port in Chile. The bike will then take athletes through Chile’s backbone road, Ruta 5 through the coastline and along a desert landscape. The athletes will then run through the city’s coastal promenade, with spectators cheering alongside.
With its mild climate and pleasant temperature, this city is one selected by tourists and locals as a top vacation destination.
The Skechers Performance IRONMAN 70.3 Coquimbo will offer a $15,000 USD professional prize purse and 30 coveted qualifying slots for the 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship taking place on Saturday, September 1 and Sunday, September 2, 2018 in Nelson Mandela Bay, South Africa.
General registration for the Skechers Performance IRONMAN 70.3 Coquimbo will open at noon local time on May 4, 2017 at www.ironman.com/coquimbo70.3. Athletes may direct their inquiries to email@example.com.
