Sold out half-marathon welcomes 5,500 runners from 45 states and 15 countries; Transamerica’s “Tomorrow Makers®” chaser will start in the last corral, with Transamerica donating $1 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for every participant she passes
San Francisco, Calif. – April 5, 2013 – The inaugural Transamerica Rock ‘n’ Roll San Francisco Half Marathon is set for Sunday, April 7. The picturesque and hilly race will start and finish on the waterfront at Aquatic Park, with views of historic Alcatraz and the Golden Gate Bridge.
“San Francisco is an iconic destination for a half marathon as it offers challenging hills combined with rewarding views and a memorable experience of running across the Golden Gate Bridge,” said Josh Furlow, SVP of Operations at Competitor Group, operators of Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series. “While participants will enjoy the finish line festival headlined by The Mowglis, the scenery that only the Bay Area can deliver will truly be the showstopper at this event.”
Transamerica “Tomorrow Makers®” chaser, Jackie Armstrong, will run the 13.1-mile race from the last corral and for every person she passes, Transamerica will donate $1 to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital®, one of the world’s premier centers for the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other deadly childhood diseases.
“Transamerica is very excited to partner with Rock ‘n’ Roll San Francisco and offer participants a fun incentive to keep running with our “Tomorrow Makers®” chaser program,” said Ed Walker, Chief Strategy Officer for Transamerica’s Life & Protection Division. “We have a strong commitment to providing the endurance community with innovative financial services geared specifically to their active lifestyles.”
Event weekend will kick off with a two-day Health & Fitness Expo at the Moscone Convention Center on Friday, April 5 and Saturday, April 6. The free expo will be open to the public and feature the latest health and nutrition information with a variety of products for sample and sale, as well as a series of interactive fitness clinics.
“Building off of a successful Rock ‘n’ Roll event in San Jose, a spring half-marathon in San Francisco is a runners dream and this race provides our community an additional opportunity to showcase the Bay Area,” said Roger Craig, a three-time Super Bowl Champion with the San Francisco 49ers. “I don’t know if I’m ready for the hills, but that’s what San Francisco is all about. I look forward to being involved and helping grow this event into one of the premier half marathons on the West Coast.”
In its inaugural year, Rock ‘n’ Roll San Francisco will showcase live bands at two stages along the course, as well as cheerleaders encouraging race participants. Participants from 45 states and 15 countries will enjoy touring the Marina, Crissy Field, the Presidio and running across the famous Golden Gate Bridge with the San Francisco skyline and coast in full view before returning for an exciting finish line festival at Aquatic Park.
