Gran Fondo New York announces GFNY Barcelona on March 21, 2015

May 8, 2014

GFNY Barcelona will start and finish in the heart of Spain's cultural and historic jewel at the Mediterranean Sea

Gran Fondo New York adds Barcelona, Spain to its 2014/15 GFNY World calendar. The race is scheduled for March 22, 2015. It will be the second GFNY event in Europe after GFNY Italia on September 21, 2014. Start and finish of GFNY Barcelona will be held in the city at the famous Montjuic mountain.

“I rode Campagnolo Gran Fondo New York last year and after this fantastic experience I knew I have to organize a GFNY in my town,” says David Frehner, founder of GFNY Barcelona. “Barcelona is one of the most important cities in the world from a cultural, tourism and entertainment perspective. It will already be spring at the end of March with perfect temperatures to ride between hills and the Mediterranean Sea. And afterwards, we’ll have a fiesta, tapas and wine!”

GFNY Barcelona will provide two distance options. Both will be – like all GFNYs – fully timed. “Bringing GFNY to a historic city like Barcelona is a huge honor for us,” adds Uli Fluhme, Gran Fondo New York’s CEO. “Spring in Spain is magical. GFNY Barcelona is the ideal season opener for Europeans and perfect in combination with a training camp on the Costa Brava.”

Campagnolo Gran Fondo New York’s goal is to bring GFNY WORLD events into countries that are particularly strongly represented at Campagnolo Gran Fondo New York or are hotbeds for cycling. Whether it’s a new or an already existing event, each is required to adhere to the standards of a true Gran Fondo: they must have road closures or police moderated intersections to allow riders the right of way, individual chip timing and rankings based on finish time. All GFNY events also offer a consistent high-quality experience, ensuring cyclists a safe, challenging and enjoyable experience from start to finish.
