Fastest GFNY Cozumel ever: 41.2 km/h average

November 14, 2019

NEW YORK CITY, November 14, 2019 – Every INTERproteccion GFNY Cozumel winner since 2014 was on the start line to contend for the title last Sunday November 10, culminating in the fastest race ever on the GFNY circuit.

The sixth annual INTERproteccion GFNY Cozumel drew 3000 riders from 50 countries and a host of professional riders from around the world to what has become known on the GFNY calendar as the ‘unofficial end of year, Global Cycling Marathon party’.

Clear blue skies presented perfect conditions for the island-based race. The race started out with numerous attacks at a fast pace with speeds averaging 60kph due to tailwinds.

By km10, Fernando Arroyo, winner of GFNY Monterrey 2019 and son of former pro Miguel Arroyo, a Greg LeMond lieutenant, made a surprise move gaining a 1.5-minute margin from a chase group of five riders. The start of the Mazda King of the Wind section resulted in attacks coming from everyone vying for position. A group of three formed and went on to catch Arroyo.

Upon completion of the first lap around the island, the lead group grew to seven riders. First, Italian Ricardo Pichetta, former GFNY NYC, Italia and Portugal winner was dropped due to a flat. With 15km to go, the fast pace started to wear down Raul Alcala (Tour de France stage winner). Five soon became three who were able to maintain pace all the way to the finish line. Mexican Olympian Moises Aldape took the win in a time of 3:47:01, followed by a sprint finish between local Yair Jimenes (2014 GFNY Cozumel winner) in 3:47:08 and French Cedric Haas who took third in 3:47:12. Haas’ claim to fame is solo leading the GFNY World Championship in NYC up Bear Mountain both in 2018 and 2019. After finishing third at GFNYs flattest and fastest race, he’s the hot favorite to win the mountainous GFNY Europe Championship Alpes Vaujany in his home country on August 30, 2020. 4300m of climbing over just 112km are more up his alley.

In the women’s race, eventual winner Ana Maria Hernandez managed to maintain position at the front of her group out of danger throughout the race. Hernandez tried to find a break on the second loop but soon realized the main group was not allowing her to break free.

On return to the city, Hernandez wisely opted to stay in front to avoid any accidents and crossed the line in 3:48:20. She was followed shortly afterwards by Maria Montserrat Camargo. Antoniata Gaxiloa Gonzalez rounded out the podium in third.

GFNY Global Cycling Marathon Series next goes to Chile on November 24th.
