OMAN by UTMB® Finishes with Americans Jason Schlarb and Meredith Edwards Finishing in Top Positions
Crans Montana, Switzerland, (Dec 3, 2018) — UTMB® International, the international division of the world-renowned Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc (UTMB), cheered their first-ever OMAN by UTMB® athletes across the finish line this weekend, as the 137km (85 mile) adventure came to a successful conclusion. The much anticipated OMAN by UTMB® race was the first middle-eastern sanctioned UTMB competition by the famed European-based ultra-trail race producer.
Crossing the finish line together in a cheerful in embrace, American runner Jason Schlarb and Diego ‘Zpeedy’ Pazos of Switzerland took the tie-win with a time of 20:45:37. The women’s race was won by the British runner Anna-Marie Watson with a time of 26:20:27, following in third place was American athlete Meredith Edwards. OMAN by UTMB® attracted athletes from 57 countries around the world, as well as a 47-strong local contingent of Omani runners who were led home by Hamdan Al Khatri, who finished 19th in a time of 29:04:10.
Watson, a former British Army captain, was delighted to have been a part of the inaugural OMAN by UTMB®. “It’s been an amazing day – I can’t quite believe it to be honest, and to come in ninth overall as well was just the icing on the cake,” said Watson, “I have spent several holidays here, diving, seeing the turtles, and chilling out in Muscat. There is so much to explore in Oman. It’s a true gem in the Middle East.”
Described by UTMB® Mont-Blanc Race Director Michel Poletti as “a must-do race”, OMAN by UTMB® was carefully designed to produce a challenging course that would immerse runners in the natural beauty of Oman’s dramatic interior. Over the 85 mile course, runners wound through ancient villages, desert landscapes, mountainous ridges, and ascended the 2,200m Jebel Akhdar — Oman’s “Green Mountain.”
The involvement of local communities along the course and the creation of a long-term legacy was critical to delivering a top tier race experience. The race used sections of trail based on traditional village to village pathways; an aspect of cultural immersion that race organizers worked closely with local groups to plan and improve.
Details of next year’s OMAN by UTMB® will be announced in the coming days.
