Lisbon Marathon to join EDP Rock ‘n’ Roll Lisbon as part of three-city partnership
Lisbon, Portugal—December 20, 2012—Competitor Group Europe and its parent company, Competitor Group, Inc. (CGI),the leading active lifestyle sports media and event entertainment company in the United States, and Maratona Clube de Portugal today announced a partnership operate the Lisbon Marathon beginning in 2013.
The 26.2-mile race will be added to the Vodafone Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon, with a tentative date of Sunday, Oct. 6. 2013. The Maratona Clube and Competitor also collaborate on two other races in Portugal including the EDP Lisbon Half Marathon in March, and Corrida da Mulher 5k women’s race in May.
EDP Rock ‘n’ Roll Lisbon and and Vodafone Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon will feature separate courses, with the half marathon starting at Vasco da Gama Bridge and the full marathon beginning in the beach city of Cascais. After touring the city of Lisbon, the flat and fast courses will unite and finish at Parque das Nações, where the 1998 World Exposition took place. The race also includes a shorter distance Mini Marathon sponsored by EDP, which starts and finishes at the same location as the half marathon and allows for wider participation.
“We take special care in choosing destinations we know that runners will love and Vodafone Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon was a hit last year with a sold-out field,” said Tom Godfrey, General Manager of Europe for Competitor Group. “It is a natural progression to add a marathon distance to offer more of a variety for runners, and adding the Lisbon Marathon will make that transition even more seamless.”
The marathon course starts outside of Lisbon and runs 13 miles down the coast. Spectacular vistas await runners as the musically themed 26.2 mile course weaves along the River Tagus and past Lisbon’s historic landmarks, rich architecture, spectacular churches, and numerous cultural attractions. Live bands and cheering spectators will line both race courses, concluding with a celebratory finish line festival.
This original concept of the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series was created by Competitor Group, Inc. (CGI), the leading active lifestyle sports media and event entertainment company in the United States. The Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series grew from a single race in 1998 to the World’s Largest Running Series, and now has 32 events around the world including six races in Europe — Madrid, Edinburgh, Dublin, Nice, Oslo and Lisbon.
