Olympian Laurie Hernandez Joined Participants in the 5K
Miami, FL – San Juan welcomed the Divas® Half Marathon & 5K in Puerto Rico participants with open arms as the city looked to move forward from Hurricane Maria, which devastated the island just over four months ago. Laurie Hernandez, two-time Olympic medalist for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Women’s Gymnastics Team, participated in the 5K along with her mother, Wanda. Hernandez, who is of Puerto Rican descent, addressed the crowd ahead of the race. Hernandez stated, “It’s both an honor and a blessing to be here with all of you. As an athlete, running signifies strength, and it also signifies the will to move forward, and I think that’s exactly what this island is doing.”
Jenny McCoy, from New York, NY, placed first in the 5K with a time of 24 minutes and 41 seconds followed by Kristine Maymi, from Hormigueros, PR, who came in second in 26 minutes and 5 seconds. Agnes Aponte, from Toa Alta, PR, finished third with a time of 26 minutes and 36 seconds.
Tori Brown, from Indianapolis, IN, placed first in the half marathon with a time of 1 hour, 36 minutes and 49 seconds. Locals from San Juan, PR finished second and third. Doriliz Perez finished in a time of 1 hour, 42 minutes and 37 seconds, while Adriana Caparros finished in 1 hour, 47 minutes and 53 seconds to round out the top three.
The magnitude of this event, and the resiliency of the people of Puerto Rico, was not lost on Robert Pozo, President and CEO of Continental Event and Sports Management. “We wanted to come back and produce the Divas® Half Marathon & 5K after we postponed due to the storm. Turning our backs on the island, and the wonderful people of Puerto Rico, was never an option,” said Pozo. “As Hispanics, we have an incredible bond, and we all needed to join together and show that Puerto Rico was up and running. Bringing back the first international sporting event to the island after the hurricane was an honor.”
The Divas® Half Marathon & 5K in Puerto Rico began with a health and fitness boutique hosted by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company (PRTC), located in the heart of Old San Juan. Participants picked up their packets, which included a women’s-fit tech tee and pink tutu.
Participants began the race oceanside near Sixto Escobar Stadium. As with all Divas events, runners crossed the finish line in style, complete with pink boas and tiaras. Finishers were rewarded with a medal fit for a Diva, complete with a Pandora®-compatible, heart-shaped charm. Participants celebrated their accomplishments with a glass of Barefoot Pink Moscato.
