The annual list recognizes the 50 Best Running Stores in America®, Fleet Feet Sports Syracuse named 2012 Running Store of the Year
San Diego, Calif. – December 14, 2012 – The votes are in, and Competitor magazine has once again compiled the best running stores in America. Among the top retailers, Fleet Feet Syracuse was named the 2012 Running Store of the Year. The selection of the 50 Best Running Stores in America caps off a year-long effort by Competitor magazine and Formula 4 Media, LLC, publishers of Running Insight and producers of The Running Event. The results are published in this month’s December 2012 issue of Competitor and on Competitor.com.
“We’re proud to recognize and honor specialty stores like Fleet Feet Sports Syracuse as they play such an essential role to enable a healthy and active lifestyle,” said Doug Kaplan, Competitor SVP. “Our list of best running stores in America is a tried and true way to find top-notch running and endurance sports gear, particularly since our readers visit more stores and try more new products than anyone.”
The search began this spring with a notice posted on Competitor.com asking runners to recommend their favorite running store. More than 15,000 consumers nominated over 150 stores across the country. The evaluation process consisted of an undercover mystery shopping rating by Franklin Retail Solutions based on 20 different criteria, a rating of the store’s community service and involvement, and input from the leading brands supplying these stores. The awards were presented at The Running Event, the annual industry trade show and conference for the running industry.
“We have to be the most inclusive store in town. Our job is to make sure everyone is welcome,” said Ed Griffin, owner of Fleet Feet Syracuse, the 2012 Running Store of the Year. “We get fast runners who have been running their whole life and new runners who have never run at all, and every kind of runner in between. And we have to be able to relate to each customer, find out what their story is and find out what they’re trying to accomplish and be able to make recommendations based on that.”
Competitor magazine, which publishes eight regional editions 12 times a year, focuses on fitness-oriented endurance sports, like running, cycling, swimming and triathlon. The magazine is targeted at adult athletes who participate in these sports for both recreation and fitness.
