St. Jude Children Research Hospital® named official benefiting charity
MIAMI, Fla. (Aug. 15, 2012) – Competitor Group, Inc. (CGI), the leading active lifestyle sports media and event entertainment company, has named St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® the official benefiting charity of the St. Jude Latin Music Miami Beach Half Marathon on Sunday, Nov. 18. The second annual event will feature an oceanfront finish line and two-day health and fitness expo on the sand.
Celebrating 50 years of finding cures and saving lives of countless children, St. Jude is a premier center for the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other deadly childhood diseases. With this mission in mind, the hospital encourages fitness enthusiasts to run for a cause as St. Jude Heroes, which is a fundraising program with incentives that also serves as the official training program for participants.
“St. Jude Heroes are a remarkable group of fitness enthusiasts who help St. Jude give hope to children who are fighting for their lives,” said Richard Shadyac Jr., CEO of ALSAC/St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. “St. Jude Heroes raise money to support our pioneering research and exceptional patient care, all while ensuring that no family ever pays St. Jude for anything.”
The St. Jude Latin Music Miami Beach Half Marathon starts on legendary Ocean Drive in South Beach. Last year the inaugural event featured a record-setting performance by U.S. Olympian Shalene Flanagan and a blockbuster finish line concert by rapper Pitbull, who performed a Latin mashup of his chart-topping hits to a shoulder-to-shoulder crowd on the beach.
Participants will enjoy a scenic route with more than six miles of the route running along the water, including spectacular views of the Port of Miami cruise ship terminal, Star, Palm, Hibiscus and Fisher Islands.
“Building on the foundation of our 2011 partnership in Miami Beach and the St. Jude Country Music Marathon in Nashville, we know we can have a greater impact supporting the St. Jude Heroes program and the fight against childhood cancer and other deadly diseases,” said Scott Dickey, CEO of CGI. “With a shared vision of promoting a healthy and active lifestyle, the St. Jude Latin Music Miami Beach Half Marathon promises a rewarding weekend of fun and sun that you can only have in South Beach.”
Over its 15-year history, charity partners have raised more than $272 million through the Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon Series, which has become one of the largest and most successful fundraising platforms in the world. About St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital
Since opening 50 years ago, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has changed the way the world treats childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. No family ever pays St. Jude for the care their child receives, and for every child treated here, thousands more have been saved worldwide through St. Jude discoveries. The hospital has played a pivotal role in pushing U.S. pediatric cancer survival rates from 20 to 80 percent overall, and is the first and only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center devoted solely to children. It is also a leader in the research and treatment of blood disorders and infectious diseases in children. St. Jude was founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas, who believed that no child should die in the dawn of life.
