Colorado Classic partners with local organizations to impact social change with bikes

(DENVER, CO—August 22, 2019) – The Colorado Classic® presented by VF Corporation has announced the ‘Bikes for Good’ initiatives that are taking place in conjunction with this year’s race. This year’s ‘Bikes for Good’ efforts include teaming with Wish for WheelsBicycle Colorado, and the Colorado Girl Scouts.

Through the Colorado Classic’s partnership with local organization, Wish for Wheels, over 220 bikes have been funded and built for Colorado 2nd graders in Tier 1 Schools from the generosity of VF Corporation and the Gates Corporation. The Wish for Wheels’ mission is to transform the lives of 2nd graders from low-income communities, broadening their scope for personal growth and a healthy lifestyle through the gift of a new bicycle and helmet.

With the support of Wish for Wheels and Bicycle Colorado, Mayor Michael Hancock will kick-off Open Streets Denver with his third annual Mayor’s Bike Parade on Sunday August 25 in Denver from 10:30 am – 10:45 am, before the start of stage 4 of this year’s Colorado Classic.  Approximately 50 second graders from the African Leadership Group will be gifted bicycles to ride in the event.

Open to kids and families of all ages and abilities, the Mayor’s Ride will start under the Colorado Classic’s start/finish line arch at 21st and Blake and proceed along the Open Streets Denver route.

“Wish for Wheels is excited to be a partner with the Colorado Classic and their sponsors, VF Corporation and Gates Corporation,” said Brad Appel, Founder and Executive Director of Wish For Wheels. “Both companies have supported our Bike Build/Give program to Build and Give bikes to 2nd graders in Title I schools. These bikes will be ridden by some of the 2nd graders in the Mayor’s ride. Wish for Wheels has a Cycling Club with 200+ members who will help with the Mayor’s Ride and be part of the Colorado Classic.”

“More than a bicycle race, the Colorado Classic is a mission-driven movement to achieve gender equity in professional cycling and in other aspects of life,” said Peter Piccolo, Executive Director of Bicycle Colorado. “This mission aligns perfectly with our team’s values of equity and inclusivity, and our efforts to make bicycling safe and accessible for every person who rides or wants to start riding a bike, including women of all ages and abilities.”

Colorado-based Girl Scouts will also have the opportunity to earn a patch with this year’s Colorado Classic. Girl Scouts can earn their patch by watching the race in person or by streaming the race and going for a bike ride. There are 200 patches available in Colorado for participation with this year’s race.

“We are thrilled to partner with so many amazing organizations to inspire social change,” said Lucy Diaz, COO of RPM Events Group. “Because of the Colorado Classic’s efforts and altruism from VF Corporation and the Gates Corporation, over 220 bikes were donated and built this year. This means that 220 more children will be able to enjoy the health benefits and freedom from riding a bike.”

The Colorado Classic® presented by VF Corporation (Aug 22-25, 2019) is one of the premiere standalone pro women’s cycling races in the world. Nearly 100 of the world’s best racers from 16 teams will compete in the UCI 2.1 four-stage race, coursing through Steamboat Springs, Avon, Golden and Denver.
